  • Other big sky games 8/23

The whole thing is likely to break up and realign again before that happens. UNLV is a much more talented version of Sac right now.

Starter. The two deeps are meaningless.

Most programs Davis included call the edge a LB but functionally this is a pass rushing DE that usually lines up on the ball. Last year they played base with two LBs, Meyer and Connors. This year sub out Meyer for Rutchena. The game is situational so you match groupings based on the personnel on offense but you usually need 5 dbs on the field and a lot of the mix/match depends on whether your better player/matchup is an athletic third backer or a safety that can play up in the box.

The $ position is an edge that rushes from the LOS, so 4-2-5.

The 3-3-5 is the stack defense which few programs run. Davis runs a base nickel in a 4-2-5 alignment like just about everyone in the country these days. The $ position is an edge that lines up on the ball mostly.

Nice job Brock. The piece with Shelt was great. Keep the content coming.

Bell is a safety and mainly played special teams last year.

Considering Cal can’t land guys in that category don’t get your hopes up. Sac is just renting some of these commits, of which only one is a 4*.
  • Sac State's bid for the Pac 12 Thread

That is exactly what is happening. The PAC 12 brand is really just the MWC plus a couple of stray animals. The MWC looks like the old WAC with some randoms. Neither of these conferences are particularly appealing to casual football fans in the Sac market. Plus, in five years the media deals wind down and it’s back to the drawing board.

Hasson is a key depth guy for the OL this season if healthy. He can plug in anywhere.

You can divide the NIL guess by 10 and would still be high on the amount they have to “invest.” The amount they have promised is something different.

Montana is just a different dynamic. Demand from paying customers well exceeds supply. Then factor in weather and the lack of competition for sports entertainment and you have a recipe for success with premium seating. Davis has more supply than demand and as Fugawe astutely points out, the capex associated with traditional suites does not present a compelling economic opportunity. What a lot of schools are doing now is building a club experience in one of the end zones. This provides a differentiated experience (aka an expensive bar) that generally pencils from year 1.

Those guys have been asked for years and have passed. Many of them have kings box seats or suites. The only way this works is if it’s pushed hard by May and he really leans on Health and the university’s major partners. The economics on suites are not great most places (Montana is not most places).
  • New Uniforms

Exactly. It’s just marketing. HS programs roll out 5+ uni combos these days. I’ll take the Tahoe uniforms over the grays or the all navy from recent years. Agree that some gold would make these better.

Hasson followed his HC to Wake. That’s a good get. If healthy he can plug in anywhere.

Tells you all you need to know about Marion. Conklin is a complete stud and wasn’t planning to leave until things turned into a circus.
  • Jon Wilner article on NCAA chaos

The key is to avoid trying to fix yesterday’s problem when you’re in a dynamic landscape. We don’t know exactly how this shakes out but as with prior iterations of realignment, the programs that focus on the main things are best positioned to deal with change.
