Thanks for posting those! I really appreciate your sharing those clips.

Hickey ROCKED as a venue. They also did closed circuit (B&W) TV down into the "women's gym" for overflow toward the end of the season. Mike Lien played in Hickey. Gyms had real character then. The Stanford gym with that suspended floor was memorable - you could watch it move! I gather shin splints weren't an issue there.

What I'll miss most by not going to Henderson: the Hawai'i band. They are fantastic.

That was the 1969 NCAA Div II Western regional.

SF State beat UCI 81-55, UNLV beach UCD 84-81
Then SF State beat UNLV 77-72 while the Age lost to UCI 82-70

    Great memories

That was a terrific game Toke69. I was there and vividly remember it. A great season. The loss the next night at Hayward was awful. Bob Johnson must be the calmest player I can remember.

But the game against UNLV was also terrific. Tom Cups had a super game, was fouled in the last moments but the officials swallowed their whistles, possibly because the home crowd was throwing wood blocks onto the court. I vaguely remember those blocks were handed out as noise makers. Well done, idiots. SF State played UC Irvine. I remember the UCI band featured an electric violin. The Aggie All Male Maverick Marching Band found a way to make the trip and were super.

Cal Poly needs a Ted Lasso BELIEVE sign because they sure find ways to auger in during the last minutes of a game. They are a very very competitive team. The Beach can't take them for granted that's for sure. I don't think any of the men's teams can be taken for granted.

I wish the championship was still in SoCal. Las Vegas/Henderson holds no attraction to me.

At least we're on the other side of the bracket from Fullerton!

Two words: Transfer Portal. The lure of $$$ from the top conferences will be difficult to counter.
  • WBB @ UCSB and Long Beach 3/2 and 3/4/2023
I'm also confused. Before the UCSB @ Hawai'i game there are three teams tied with identical 12-7 records. So the winner of the Hawai'i game should be 3rd (13-7), UCD 4th (12-7), and the loser 5th (12-8)

    Yes? No?

That zone the Ags played in the 2nd half was very spiffy. I enjoyed watching the team's defense flex.
  • WBB: Cal Poly at UCD
Sabel has been amazing over the past few games. She has a shot that isn't quite a hook, isn't really a jumper - I don't know how to categorize it. But she often sinks it. And her shot seems to start very low. Clearly she is becoming confident in all phases of her game. When Jen "goes small" she'll step into the center spot. I could get to like the fluidity of the small lineup.
  • MBB: UC Davis (15-11, 8-6) at UC Irvine (18-8, 11-3) Sat., Feb. 18 at 1:00 pm
We watched Losé's progress after his injury. He was on the treatment table, prone, with what we thought was a hot towel on his back for some time. Then they fitted him with one of those electro-corsets with the blinking lights. So they were treating his back.
  • WBB: UCD vs Irvine 2/18 CANCELLED
It's odd that Arizona (State??) had to forfeit games because "they couldn't put enough scholarship players on court". This year!

    So I don't understand. Maybe it's a Pac12 thing?
  • WBB: Aggies vs Riverside Thursday 2/9
I'm not in the "solid win" camp at all. I thought the Ags looked out of sorts and out of sync for much of the game. The turning point was marked by the three consecutive 3-pointers that allowed the Age to close within 2 (?). Also, those blocks by Megan Jones definitely made a difference.

I'd like to see better passing. Gray had a couple of super no-look passes that were spot-on. She's much less likely to make turnovers than Sydney Burns.

It was a win - but not one to celebrate.
  • MBB: Hawai`i (15-6, 7-3) at UC Davis (13-9, 6-4) Thurs., Feb. 2, 6:00 pm
Pepper boggles my mind. Several times tonight I turned to my wife and said "that was impossible." And then he does something else amazing.
  • MBB: UC Davis (8-7, 1-2) at CSUN (3-12, 0-4) Weds. Jan. 11 at 7:00 pm
Toke69 - I hadn't realized that families were moved when the airport was sited. Was that an eminent domain thing? I'm sorry it happened but it also makes a LOT of sense. Complaints about noise from residents on the south side make for less-than-optimum departures.

It might be urban legend but I was told that the current site of the Yolo County Airport was put forward as the airport site because it has much less fog.

None of this has anything to do with basketball - Go Ags!
  • WBB: Hawaii (2-7) at the Aggies (5-6) 6 pm Thursday 12/29
Turner had a tough night. But I thought the Ags’ new lineup worked well. Jen said the team would evolve. If Turner can return to form (I wonder if she’s got a low-grade injury?) we’ll be in the hunt.
  • MBB: UC Davis (7-5) at Hawai`i (9-3) Thurs, Dec. 29, 8:59
We were at that game, sitting behind the Aggie bench. The crowd behind the basket threw little squeeze balls that were given out as door prizes. They were really over the top, the verbal abuse was bad. The Hawai’i team was also show-boating and drawing out the crowd. I really really disliked that team. Jim was right to walk off the court with his team.

I was sorry to see the crowd throwing items onto the court during this game.
  • WBB: Northern Arizona (5-6) at the Aggies (4-5) 5 p.m. Monday 12/19
I have a beef: <rant>I went to the women's site before the game to get a feel for Eastern Washington. There was NOTHING. The game notes looked like they had been written by a bad AI or perhaps written by someone unfamiliar with almost anything. So then I go to the men's site and see a great writeup with details on UCLA and extensive notes about the team.

What the heck! Something is wrong with the UC Davis athletic department. The level of competence/interest between the men's and women's program is stark and needs to be corrected.
    </rant>

    pant pant pant

    Now back to basketball.
