  • WNIT Selection Process Details
Looks like winner of UCD/Utah plays winner of Colo. St./St. Mary's. Not sure how the NCAA is seeding the WNIT, or picking sites. We beat the Gaels by 2 in the regular season so we could make a pitch for a home game if Ags and Gaels both pulled the road victories.

Wonder why the WNIT has 64 teams, but the men's NIT has only 32? Maybe I could come up with some irreverent answer if I had another hour of sleep.
  • UC Davis Aggies vs NC Central Eagles @ Dayton, OH
This is only the Eagles' sixth season in D1 but this is their second trip to the NCAA's (2014, 2017) and they've been to the NIT once (2015).

Just my two cents on the broadcast....when you get to the late night Saturday championship game for a mid-major conference, and one that is not known for basketball, you get to the bottom of the barrel with broadcasters. I won't claim to know enough about the intricacies of the game to criticize their knowledge, but the delivery, particularly as they went into commercial breaks, was annoying to at least one old guy sitting in front of a TV in northern California.

"But their worst loss, which happened during the last regular season game, came against N.C. A&T,..."

That would be the N.C.A&T Aggies. Just sayin'

Not showing any love for the Big West. UCI goes into the NIT as an 8 seed and has to travel to Illinois. Cal State-Bakersfield, also an 8 seed and an auto bid, only has to travel to Berkeley.
  • Selection Sunday
I had a minor connection with a school that played a first round game in Sac in, I think, 2002. They lost their first game and per NCAA rules they were out of their hotel and on the plane the next day.

    Beat the Eagles!
  • Causeway Cup
Just a chance encounter in a tournament so there were no Causeway Cup points to be won, but Ags swept Slack in men's tennis this afternoon, 7-0.
  • Ags vs. 'Eaters: For all the marbles
I would expect nothing less of Northwestern. Any other fans would be doing something worthy of sports talk radio...."Yo mama!" With NU you get a more scholarly approach. I don't think their list of teams that have never been there is exhaustive. Probably a handful of Big West and Big Sky teams who have never been there. How about our friends on J Street?

The one in California was Cal Worthington. He had dealerships all up and down the state. His ads usually featured him and some zoo-worthy animal such as an elephant, ocelot or emu, and the line "Here's Cal Worthington and his dog, Spot!" The jingle part, and what sticks in my mind everytime I see or hear 'Cal Davis' was "Go see Cal! Go see Cal! Go see Cal!"

No one says Cal Irvine, Cal Santa Barbara, Cal Riverside...but it's Cal Davis.

Thanks for the thoughts and wishes. I have family roots about halfway between Peoria and the Quad Cities and have one neighborly request of Bradley fans. Tell the folks on the blog site (http://www.pjstarforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=100824 ) that it's UC Davis, not Cal-Davis. I think Cal Davis sells cars on late night broadcast TV.
  • May sits on Boards
USC has a graduate program offering a masters degree in public administration in Sacramento. Something like that or a political science school makes sense with the proximity to the Capitol.

On the other hand the Department of Corrections (or as they call themselves, the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation,) actually runs two separate facilities in Folsom. Folsom State Prison and California State Prison-Sacramento. Let's not go there.
  • Ags vs. 'Eaters: For all the marbles
USA Today has Ags in a play-in game against New Orleans for a 16 seed, with the winner to play Duke.

As an aside, why aren't all the play-ins for a 16 seed? Hardly fair to lose a play-in for a 11 or 12 and go home while several teams seeded lower get more rest and get to play on Thursday or Friday. I'm going to guess money and getting a few more people in the seats and motels in Dayton.
  • Ags vs. 'Eaters: For all the marbles
There's a bracket on ESPN with UCD a 15 playing Arizona in Salt Lake City.

SI has UCD as a 15 playing Kentucky.

    (Can I breathe now?)

But on to more important things, just win baby! Beat the Titans!
  • Men's Big West Conference Tournament Schedule March 9-11
We didn't even host a game when we did go two years ago. Not sure what other west coast schools might be considered for the NIT, but I bet a Pac-12, MWC, WAC or WCC school would get the nod to host the first round game over a BWC runner-up.

As I recall, back when we played Slack in FB in the D-II playoffs, we hosted because we had the application in order and Slack didn't, even though they had won the regular season streak-ending game. 'Course I think the fact that we hosted didn't get lost on the Hornets and their coaches when it came time to firing up the team. Ugly year. Ugly.

Bruce Gallaudet still pushing the NIT fall back theory: http://www.davisenterprise.com/sports/let-the-magic-carpet-ride-continue-for-aggie-hoopsters/

Interesting comment as he gets sidetracked on comparing his high school dating history to post season collegiate basketball. "...but I felt like a human NIT." Maybe it was intentional.
  • Two Font Logo
Never liked the two font logo. Looked temporary and unfinshed. I'm OK with the horse and horseshoe, but can't disagree that it is busy and probably doesn't work well on caps, helmets and team uniforms.

That being said, I am old school and not excited about the new font itself. Looks like someone took nail clippers to the upper left corner of each letter, or like the dog-eared pages of used text books and magazines. I can see that font changing every 2-3 years when uniforms need to be replaced, just because....
