These shows are great to get Sac St. and local HS students into the stadium....I guess the hope is they start to like football too, and remain interested. This looks like the target demographic from the marketing I've seen (heavy on the hot air / sh*t talk).
Also, its recruiting gimmicks. Much like offering Toosii a scholarship.
Interesting that none of the recruiting stuff is centered around a "40 year decision," like many schools use. They are literally selling a "1 year" plan.

For the NoCo game it appeared that around 6k showed up over the 3rd / 4th quarters. To my eye, attendance looked like 14k in the first half (there were like 150 people on the East side).
The crowd looked really young on TV.

I’m not invested really because I am not going to go see it. Using music, food, fireworks, etc. to draw out the community- great. The choices here would just not be my approach. It’s kind of like Disneyland and Magic Mountain both draw a crowd, but not the same crowd, and there’s one I’d pick over the other every time.

I'm sure as hell glad this year's game is in Davis...

From a post on the Hornets Football Forum regarding the fight:

During the game, maybe late second quarter? There was a noticeable murmur in the crowd, you could see a handful of idiots. Then the PA played “Why can’t we be friends?”

Our group - 16 including kids left before Yachty. But I was told that the community concerns were not another fight, but females exposing themselves and other acts happening on the field.

Oooof, I hate that we have to pay any attention to Sac State. Why no security stepping in?

One of the comments on X...."no police in sight.....Shaq we need you" lol

    What a circus.

Just to be clear...the context of my comment is the target demographic for Sac (in terms of scheduling concerts) is Sac St. students and local HS students, not thugs looking for fights.

Different, longer view. Replies indicate an environment unsafe for families, and some claim lots of drunk attendees. So the consequences of this may be horrible:

    - concerts, booze canceled
    - crowds decrease
    - not a good angle for longshot FBS pitches

I get that. I'm sure they're plan is just as you noted...to get more students and young people to the games and hope they watch a little football as well, find that it was fun and maybe come back to another game. The risk is just what happened though. There's a likelihood that it will attract some thugs who could care less about the game and end up stirring up trouble. It isn't just Sac; it could happen anywhere but, of course, big cities will be more risky.

So, Lil’ Yachty is NOT a yacht rock tribute act? Boy, I would have been in for a shock!

This will help in the search for a FBS level conference affiliation.

The school was quick to point out the brawlers were not students. I hope this is not reflective of the broader community to which Sac is trying to appeal.

Maybe im in the minority but while I think this fight was stupid and a bad look I think the whole idea that this is going to hurt FBS aspirations is overkill. This stuff happens at NFL games everytime. I think it speaks more to the admins failure to create a safe environment with ample security/police presence, especially when a large crowd with a concert was going to bring different logistics.

It looks like the crowd of people watching this melee found it entertaining:

Not sure where this comment goes... With 71 new players and new coaches, does this potentially last Causeway Classic even mean anything to Sac State? It'd be a bummer if 70+ years of a rivalry just went out with nothing more than a fizzle. Maybe Flushman can get Little Yachty for a post-game concert to get more Hornet fans to show up.

We should just end it. Sac State is not a school I want to be associated with.

In other news, I have a coworker that went to Ball St. Turns out Sac St. and Ball St. played a series in baseball this past spring. I hope that series becomes a tradition.

I am totally good with the Causeway fading away. Other than proximity, we are not natural rivals like UCD and Poly.

I like the rivalry, low travel cost, local enthusiasm and full house.

Was it played at Hughes a few times? If so, how was that?

Hughes was OK at the time, but may not be as the programs move up the NCAA ladder. The stadium holds about 25,000. Back when the Causeway was played there the field was grass. Sac City plays their games there and at the time several city high schools (Sacramento, Kennedy, McClatchy, Christian Brothers and I think even Johnson) played their games there. By late in the season the field was in pretty bad shape. (Back in the NCAC days the schedules rotated and the Causeway was not always the final regular season game.) The city high schools have since improved fields on their campuses and no longer play at Hughes, though the Jesuit v Christian Brothers "Holy Bowl" is still played there. Grass was replaced with artificial turf in 2012.

Of course the Varsity wouldn't want to play all the collegiate JV teams on a community college field.

in 1980, we played Sac at Hughes on October 4 (4th game of the season). The field by then was mostly first between the 30’s. Temperature was a crisp 110 for the 1:00 kickoff. Horrible conditions
