Here’s another “revenge” game for the Aggies they lost to CSU Bakersfield 64-75. In that one, UCD shot only 19% from the 3-point line while the Roadrunners had five players in double figures. Recent Big West play has not been kind to Bakersfield; however, prior to their waxing of Fullerton State on Saturday, they had lost 6 in row. Of primary importance is for the Ags to sweep these next two games to keep their shot at a top four finish alive.

I thought the officials really let Bakersfield get physical that game which threw off our offense (granted, that doesn't take much). If they don't let them be so handsy and we can get to the line, that will really help. I wasn't impressed with their offense. They didn't shot real well, and didn't run many offensive sets - just alot of one-on-one, and trying to generate offense off turnovers.

6.5 point favorite tonight in what’s pretty critical game. Probably last game we’ll be favored, although CSUN Saturday might be. I doubt we’ll get much tonight (c’mon Fullerton!).

As for Saturday's game, CSUN's starting point guard PJ Fuller may or may not be out depending on his injury status.

I’m wondering if we might see Roberson down the stretch. He seemed to be moving well in the one cameo (vs Hawaii, I think). They might be holding him back for a (another) redshirt, or maybe the knee wasn’t as sound as they hoped. He could be a small jolt here

Does anyone know why the NCAA rules are so strict about basketball red shirts?
  • DrMike
    830
How so? I thought it was similar to football and medical redshirts seem to be common.
  • Toke69

I heard Bob Williams and Scott Marsh taking note of the fact that in football, a player can be in up to four games then still redshirt. If a basketball player plays even one game, he or she is no longer eligible for a redshirt. This makes no sense to me, but I haven't been able to find the rationale for it. Four football games is a fourth of a season. Four basketball games isn't even an eighth.

I was not aware of that. Makes little sense. I’m guessing Roberson could apply for a medical redshirt

I can't understand how these guys are only 5-10 in the Big West. They're a lot better than their record. They play good defense. They've out-rebounded UCD 20-10. They shoot well. What's their problem or do they only play well against the Ags?

It looks like we’ve lost Chappell for the rest of the season. He has a cast on his left wrist and hand.

It would be too easy to say that the Aggies lost this game at the foul line since CSU Bakersfield outscored us there by 14 points, but the Ags didn't play very good defense, didn't rebound well especially on their own boards, and you can't blame the officials for calling a one-sided game. It's worth noting, too, that TY hit only 3 of 9 from inside the arc. It looks like there is something about the matchups against the Roadrunners that placed UCD at disadvantage.

I’m just here to say that the missed goaltending was absolutely atrocious. How can 3 refs miss a guy grabbing the rim to make a block. Lets alone not be able to use replay to make the call.

    Horrific and absolute crap!

That one hurt. I was listening to Les driving home and he was down on the lack of effort. I felt the same way. The rebounding and second chance points were due to then out working us most the time; their length did help to tip loose balls away from our shorter defenders.

I mentioned to AgAlum that we just looked slow and sluggish several times during the game. Except for Leo - he was diving for balls, getting physical down low, making that crazy hustle blocked shot. It seemed fitting that we get it down to one point….play great defense forcing them to throw up a lousy shot…..and they get the offensive board. Gut punch.

This felt like another doomed game like LBSU where they shot lights out for the only time all year. Runners had a guy score almost 20 who averaged 5 all year. Big dude make 3 3’s to make it four for the season. How many times did they score on a wild shot with 1 on the shot clock? And our free throws…when TY missed his first two, I was hoping that wasn’t an omen. When Sevilla misses the front end? Gonna be a long night.

That leaves us 9-6…..with 9-11 a real possibility. Ending on a 6-game lousy steak would be bad.

Les was really blunt in the post-game interview. He was pretty upset with the team and said his staff was spending time during the timeouts "coaching effort."

"In life you get what you deserve and we didn't play very well," said Aggie head coach Jim Les afterward.

"Credit to them, they played harder than we did. I told our guys they (Bakersfield) deserved to win and we deserved to lose. Our leadership did not pick us up tonight, and when you play half-hearted, this game is going to humble you."

I'm of the opinion that getting down on the team at this point is not going to be helpful; they're already down on themselves enough. I don't know what it was but we looked tired and uninspired for most of the game and we simply got outplayed by Bake. Maybe the blowout loss at San Diego took the wind out of our sails.

We have practically no interior presence. Bake clogged up the lane and made us a jump shooting team while dominating the boards. They were quicker and more athletic inside than us.

Our lack of a solid inside game has hurt us all season. Rocak is a great defender but he's not a serious scoring threat and he's been carrying a big load all season long with Borra out. Mani gets overpowered and struggles defensively when we put him in at the post. He's would be better as a stretch 4. Chappell has made progress this year but he's not a true post either. He seems more fit as a 4 like Mani and now he's apparently out for the season with cast on his left hand and wrist.

I've often thought that we fans have lost the value of every game for the game itself. The context of leagues and playoffs has resulted in the concept of a "meaningless" game, but for most athletes the game is context in itself, to be played to win. So my point is that the season might seem hopeless for UC Davis in that the chance of getting to the NCAAs or winning any kind of title is almost nonexistent. For myself now, each game becomes a chance to root for the team to play better and to win. It starts tomorrow with CSUN. Go Ags!

agree; I hope I don’t come across as a ‘they just didn’t want it enough’ type of fan. Basketball season is a grind, especially when we are as thin as we are. It can’t help them when they come off the road and see a small, quiet crowd….especially after getting beat up last Saturday in front of a raucous crowd.

Unfortunately I doubt we’ll be playing in front of big crowds down the stretch.

Great posts by both of you and I couldn't agree more with what you both have said.

My wife and I will always support the Aggies come thick or thin. Sure, we want a win every time the team steps on the floor and we would like to see more conference titles and success in the post-season as much as any devoted fans do but, win or lose, we support the team because of we know they are great young men with admirable character and good academics. In short, they're good people and they have their ups and downs just like any of us.

Do we groan when we throw the ball away, miss and an easy shot or clank a FT, of course, me more so than my wife though. If I get too "negative" in her opinion, I get the look! Bottom line for us is that we're just loyal fans who love the game of basketball and always will be. Go Ags!

I envy all who can attend the games in person at Davis. I'll be going to the game next week in Hawai`1, where I will be cheering for the Aggies in the middle of a hostile crowd seeking revenge for the Warriors loss at Davis, but it won't keep me from voicing my support. I've seen more Aggie men's basketball both live and on ESPN than any other sport.

One thing that puzzles me: Lose went from a solid off the bench contributor last year, to a starter early this year to ….never getting on the court in meaningful minutes. Seems like we could get a good 6-8 minutes from him to give the starters a break

We've struggled to score consistently and at a good percentage this season so I think Les felt like the need for a little more offensive punch outweighed the stellar defense of Losé. We needed Sevilla's ability to score from beyond the arc and his defense has improved although he's often giving away a few inches. Cooper and Daughtery have improved immensely since the start of the season also so Les has more options coming off the bench before Losé now as well. All 3 of these players can score and defend pretty well so that has cut into the playing time for Losé. Losé has been a defensive specialist and a decent rebounder but I think it has boiled down to the fact that we have simply needed additional scoring potential on the floor more than another strong defender.

Just a quick question here. Does our MBB/WBB programs have comparable budgets to other BWC programs?

I understand the reason we went with Sevilla, I just can’t understand how he gets ZERO minutes especially in a game we’re getting killed on the boards.

And CSUN leads the league in rebounding
