The Aggies hit the road for their final two games of the regular season beginning tonight at Fullerton. These games a very important for the Aggies even though they have already won the Big West Championship which has assured them of at least a trip to the WNIT in post-season play. The Ags, however have bigger goals in mind; they want to make their second trip ever to the NCAA Tournament.
In order to assure themselves of an auto-bid to the Big Dance the Ags will have to win the Big West Tournament next week. It's unlikely that the NCAA selection committee would take two teams from the Big West Conference if the Aggies did not win the Big West Tournament. Bottom line, the Ags need to keep winning right on through the Big West Tournament to assure that their dreams come true and they secure the best possible seeding they can get for any post-season play.
The Aggies are currently ranked #8 in the latest College Insider Women's Mid-Major Rankings. ESPN Bracketology has the Ags going to the Big Dance as a #13 seed with a trip to #4 Stanford:
Dang, the game summary is quite something. Bertsch had the best single-game offensive performance of the D1 era (34 pts, 14 FGs), which are both D1 records. She's probably going to set the all time UCD season scoring record this year because there are at least three games left to get 39.
I was checking the Live Stats every now and then while I was at the men's game and I was getting worried. The first time I checked the Ags had 4 point with a minute and a half to go in the first quarter. Then we trailed by 3 at the half and were down 8 with 6 minutes to go in the 4th before pulling it out. Morgan Bertsch had 34 points and is the first Aggie to score 30 or more in over a decade and was just 2 points shy of the all-time record of 36 set by Aimee Connor at Chico State on February 20, 1993.
I thought that this might be a trap game for the Aggies after locking up the Big West title last week at home on senior day and then going on the road to play the last place team in an empty house. That's a set up for an emotional let down. I'm glad they pulled it together enough to get their 24th win of the season.
