The Hornets take an early 5-0 lead in the 2017-18 Causeway Cup race as they beat the Lady Ags yesterday in volleyball in 5 sets. Tough loss for the Aggies as they dropped the final, tiebreaker set 15-13 after sprinting out to an 8-2 lead.

Last year all the Hornet women could manage in Causeway Cup competition was tie in soccer. The Hornet women's last win over Davis was in softball in March of 2016.

The Causeway Cup pages have not been updated for this season, but I THINK the next competition is women's soccer, at Davis, next Monday.

Women's soccer lost today, 1-0. Last year Slack women scored 2.5 Causeway points all year. They already have 10 this year. Slack didn't have 10 points last year between the men and women until April.

Next up appears to be cross country on Sept. 30. EDIT: Cross Country points are determined at the NCAA West Regionals, to be held this year on November 10th in Seattle. Good thing. We split the Aggie Open on September 2 with Sac winning the men's and UCD winning the women's. They will also compete at the Capitol Cross Challenge in Sacramento on September 30 but that does not count in the Causeway Cup competition.

Next Causeway Cup event appears to be men's soccer. Because Sac is part of the Big West for men's soccer the Ags and Hornets will play twice. October 14 @ Sac and October 29 in Davis.

Only other fall event is football at Sacramento on November 18th.

Sac State caught a big break in their soccer win over the Lady Ags. The Aggies were depleted with injuries and were down 3 starters to start the game and lost another during the game. Lousy luck!

Cross country teams competed against Slack at the Capitol Cross Challenge on Sept. 30. Results, at least as far as Us against Them, were the same as the earlier Aggie Open with Slack men placing higher than Aggie men and Aggie women higher than Slack women. As noted earlier, all cross country points are determined at the NCAA West Regionals and not at the earlier meets.

Big West conference soccer opened last week and the results suggest the Aggie and Hornet men are pretty even. Ags defeated UCI and tied CSUN. Hornets defeated CSUN and tied UCI.

Sun don't shine on the same dog everyday. This fall has been a complete Causeway turnaround from last fall.

From what I can piece together Slack was won volleyball and women's soccer. UCD has one victory in men's soccer with one more game to be played on October 29. Throw in football on November 18th and the cross-country regionals on November 10th and that's it for fall sports.

We jump quickly into winter sports with mens' basketball on Nov. 21st and women's basketball on Nov. 30th.

There are some other competitions, like a couple of cross country meets and, I think, a fall softball game, but those usually are not counted in the Causeway Cup scoring.

Mens' soccer defeated Slack today, 3-0. (A rout by soccer standards.) Causeway score should be Slack 10, Davis 5.

Next up, I think, is the NCAA cross-country regional on November 10. If earlier meets are any indication, we should expect a split with the Aggie women defeating the Hornet woman and the Hornet men, well, you get the idea....but that's why they run the meets.

    Go Ags!

It is November 7, fall sports are almost over, yet neither school has updated its Causeway Cup page for the 2017-2018 school year.

UCD men finished 16th and the women finished 20th in the NCAA West Regional Cross Country Championships, while the Slack State men finished 23rd and the women 22nd. This gives the Ags 10 points in the Causeway Cup standings, bringing the running score to UCD 15 - CSUS 10.

Order is restored in the universe.

And because I knew you would want to know, both schools athletics websites have brought their Causeway Cup pages into the 2017-18 school year.

WIth the wins in both mens and women's basketball, Ags close the calendar year ahead 25-15.

(Traditionally Slack does better in Spring sports.)

Women defeated Slack in the first of two gymnastic meets by 1/8th of a point, which I think is the same as a rout in gymnastics. Running Causeway Cup score is Ags 27.5, Hornets 15. Next up is return in gymnastics, at Sac, on March 16th. (The dates on the Causeway Cup webpage have been tweaked a bit.)

Going back over the last few years, women's golf has not been part of the Causeway Cup competition. Wonder why?
  • 72Aggie
    322
Slack finished third and UCD fourth in a "quadrangular" meet last night. Running Causeway Cup score is now Davis 27.5, Slack 17.5. The softball game scheduled for today as part of the NorCal Challenge has been postponed due to weather and will "likely be rescheduled." Pending that calendar issue, the next scheduled event is men's tennis in Sacramento on April 11th.

Men's tennis lost a close one to Slack yesterday, 4-3. Running score is now UCD 27.5, Slack 22.5. Next up is a men's golf tournament (The El Macero "Classic") this weekend.
  • 72Aggie

Men's golf placed 5th in their own tournament, well ahead of Slack who finished 11th (of 13). With the higher placing, the Ags earn 5 more Causeway points. That brings the running score to UCD 32.5, Slack 22.5. Next event on the schedule is the first of two baseball games, to be played this coming Tuesday evening in Davis.

    Go Ags!

Ouch. Baseball lost, 8-2. Giving up 7 runs in one inning will do that to you. Causeway running score is not UCD 32.5, SUCS 25.0. Next up is track this Friday and women's tennis on Saturday.

The track meet, to be held at Sac, has been rescheduled to April 27th.

According to the Slack sports site, UCD women defeated Slack women in tennis today, 4-3. Running score is now UCD 37.5, SUCS 25. Next up is Track & Field this coming Friday, at Slack. The second baseball game is scheduled for May 8th, and a softball rain-out remains to be scheduled. One win or a couple of ties and the Causeway Cup remains where it is happiest.

So we may have assured at least a tie. Still nothing in print about making up the rain postponed softball game. Looking at team schedules, it will be hard to find a date, unless both teams miss the play-offs and they can tack a game on after the regular season....assuming NCAA rules permit that. Hornet website simply does not show the game and lists a maximum of 75 points. http://hornetsports.com/fan_info/causewaycup/2017-18
If that's the case, we've locked down a tie.
