Great news for the Hawkins family! Wow. Two HCs in the same family is not unheard of, but very uncommon. father and son. Rare. Very rare indeed. Maybe happened before? I can’t think of another.
I will say that Cody has a very tough challenge in front of him. Idaho State has an abysmal reputation over the last decade plus and it a generally tough place to recruit. I wish him luck, but obviously hope he still loses to his dad every time we play.
Reading Mike Cody's full bio here after his playing days, guy has been around quite a bit in a decade picking up all kinds of stuff. I like that he's coming off the OL gig, because line play and blocking schemes matter more than fancy x's, y's and z's when running an offense.
My guess is that he will keep his hands off the current roster (and recruits?) in terms of encouraging portal transfer to Idaho State since his dad is Head Coach.
I thought our running game was the best I can recall, although I have to admit I didn’t watch much during the Gould years, so I think Mike Cody did a good job,
Now we need a QB coach. Taylor Chapatte might be a candidate as he filled that role for two years at San Diego.
Kevin Burke Has also been a QB coach at Mount Union.
I'm happy for Cody. It seemed like he struggled early as he learned coaching but I liked him more this year. I hope Idaho State doesn't kill his coaching career before it starts. After Northern Colorado, they are probably the worst program in the Big Sky.
I met him briefly, and he came off as reasonable and grounded. He started off his first year as OC surprisingly slow and unimaginative, predictable play calling like Coach Gould. Glad he improved and best of luck.
I don’t think he started slow and unimaginative. He became OC in spring of 2021, new quarterback, and they chose to be run oriented, which they were effective with. First game they ran for over 250 yards in a win against a ranked opponent, Idaho. Then in the fall, against Tulsa they won by throwing for over 300 yards. His teams were generally balanced and effective. Plough never beat an FCS ranked opponent, and Cody Hawkins did three times, once each season. Idaho twice and Weber once.
