Thursday final: UCD 13, LMU 12.

With one game to go Ags clinch best regular season record and top seed in the WWPA championships, which coincidentally they will host in a couple of weeks.

Saturday final: UCSD 11, UCD 10.

In past years this game decided the regular season champion, but the Tritons tripped up a couple of times earlier this season. Should be quite a tournament with the NCAA bid on the line.

UCD defeated California Baptist, 14-9, in the WWPA tournament finals. Ags will get the bid to the "play-in" portion of the NCAA tournament.

(Water polo is a little different. NCAA says the tourney is only 4 teams, but there are 6 (?) teams and two (?) play-ins earlier in the week at the same site as the Final Four. (Two teams get byes, the other four participate in play-ins.) This year the tourney is at UCLA on the weekend of December 4-5. NCAA will announce the brackets and teams later tonight. No TV...just a press release.)

The #7 Aggies (19-8) beat #5 Long Beach State 9-8 in OT in the Men's NCAA Water Polo Championships held at UCLA. This broke a 12 game losing streak to The Beach and was only the second Aggie win over LB in the last 18 matches.

"It feels great, honestly," Child and Meisel Families Director of Men's Water Polo Daniel Leyson said after the match. "It takes a lot of work to get here, and to get to this match so many times and to have lost it, it's just a long road to get back and there's never a guarantee you're going to get back to it the following year.

"I'm just thankful and excited for our team. It's not about me, it's about the players and the work they put in the pool today. It was pretty phenomenal to watch. It was a very hard-fought game, a very closely contested match against a very well-coached team with some excellent players."

The Ags will now play #1 USC in a semi-final match on Saturday at 2 pm. The Trojans defeated the Aggies twice this season 13-7 and 13-8. Go Ags!

"They're the No. 1 seed and they have a ton of weapons at every position, but we're a little bit more familiar with them having played them a couple of times," Leyson said. "We're looking forward to continuing on and playing that game. We're excited for what's to come.

"It's definitely an underdog type scenario and, you know, the underdog never has to face as much pressure as the favorite. However, the underdog has to play well in order to knock off the favorite. They have a very strong and experienced team and they're a formidable opponent."

Beating Long Beach State, the Gold Coast champ, was as good as hanging with USC. At some point the Ags should probably leave the WWPA and join our Big West brethren in the Gold Coast, but let's enjoy this for the present.

UPDATE: Sunday's championship final: Cal 13, USC 12.
