You would be assuming the would- be SAC State contributors care enough to post. They just dust off their Duck Favis shirts once a year, make some noise. Game's over, they go back into hibernation.

The animosity between the two schools is blown out of proportion. As a grad student I'd wear UCD stuff on campus indiscriminantly, and the only people who ever commented were former Davis students who were there to become teachers. Well there was that time I was hit with a foul ball while wearing a UCD shirt and people cheered, but I think they were more applauding the fact I was ok.

I could probably walk around Davis now with a SAC State shirt and barely anyone would notice. The millennials would be too busy staring at their phones (while riding bikes at top speed on the sidewalk no less) to notice.

It is a shame for many of SAC State's athletic programs that they have to deal with such an overwhelming level of student apathy. I've met several of their coaches (different sports), and they're all intelligent, caring people who have the student- athletes best interests in mind. They've improved their programs, but they can't get students to attend. It's gotta be Joe Six- Pack from Sactown (I hate "Sactown") who attends. If it weren't for old white dudes from wherever the bball team would have about a dozen fans in attendance.

Edit:has to be more than a dozen. I neglected to include the visiting team's fans. Also forgot the SAC State cheerleaders, the basketball team, and the coaches. This of course presumes that they are rooting for SAC State.

What were the chances a contributor named Willie Hays would post after I made a baseball reference ? Welcome !

I wouldn't mind seeing the game return to Hughes Stadium. It has an old- timey feel to it that causes nostalgic moments like seeing CAL football play ASU when I was 9. Maybe that's because CAL is really old and grimy- looking too,. which it even was back then. I've never been back to Berkeley. Why go ?

SAC City's baseball field (which is right next door) brings back memories too. They've got that old hot dog stand with the menu that figurativelysays, "Vegan go home !" and "Gluten served here." Their hot dogs are better than the ones at Dobbins Stadium too. Our possible collective German ancestors would be appalled !
  • Hewitt signs with Tulsa
They've probably got a similar playing style to College of The Redlands, which regularly puts up games in the 100s but can give up 110- 120 in the same games just as easily.
  • MBB 7:30 pm Wednesday: Aggies (1-0) @ Pacific (0-1)
Boy, what a tough day losing a game with a tie score (80- 80) :D

But I kid. I make funny typos too.

So many transfers for Ugly Old Potatoes. Are they turning into Cal State Bakersfield North ?

Yes, I'm sure SAC State will double its student attendance from 10 to 20 for the game. UCD isn't the only school that has trouble getting students to attend. Maybe if they were promised free weed....

I pretty much exclusively attend college baseball games anymore, so I'm not going, even though it's less than 10 miles away. Don't like the boorish element that appears at Causeway Classic games. Too bad too. They have some pretty good food trucks usually.

What trash talk has my second college been coming up with other than t- shirts with "Duck Favis". ?

I remember in my first ever class at UCD the professor was ripping on Woodland. What has Woodland done to deserve that aside from looking like a place where it's winter all year and having a mall with a Gottschalk's sign. It's not coming back ! Take down the sign !

Whoever thought Northern Colorado was a favorite was obviously thinking UNC was going to start actual bears. Perhaps they should have.
  • Blue/Gold World Series
I read on Twitter Alex Trautner had five scoreless innings of relief. Very impressive.

In the video #19 r(the reliever for Gold who impressed me) ran out of the dugout, so he isn't Trautner. He had impressive movement on his pitches, and was a right- hander. #19 last year was infielder Steve Ouellette. Don't think that was he unless he's a super- quick study at pitching. At most only 8 pitchers that played last year returned. One of them started. One was playing infield. Two were lefties...probably a new guy. Or perhaps Andres Lara. I hadn't seen him pitch before.

What has really hurt this team is that the 2015 recruiting class hasn't panned out yet like the coaching staff hoped. While Van Blake and Briggs have taken big steps forward in the infield, the overall pitching from that class (which was supposed to include them) has been disappointing. To be fair injuries have played a big role. Blake Hannah is a good pitcher, but for some reason they haven't pitched him much. Steindorf showed potential, but he was used sparingly and now hasn't pitched in a year. Two other recruits were injured and never threw a pitch for UCD before they transferred out Another pitched decently but was gone after 1 year. That leaves Brown, who saves his rough outings for when I attend. Seriously he must have a sub- 4.00 era when I don't.

Your upperclassmen are supposed to be the backbone of the team (ideally), but the disappointing results (pitching only) of that recruiting class (and the departures of Razo, Stone, Mullins, and Garcia) has left the team without experienced pitching. Don't think they'll have trouble hitting, but I will say Hooper shouldn't be in the leadoff spot as he was in the game I attended. He's a power hitter with the ability to drive in a lot of runs...using him as a table- setter is just silly.

Calm down, guys. It's opposite day. The team with the lowest score wins. SUU just wasn't informed. Suckers !

I thought everything was supposed to be bigger + better in TX ? Why can't they put those bigger + better Texan brains to good use + figure out something better to do than waste that kind of money ?

Sorry, didn't mean to rip on TX. Just mad I wasted $7.75 on a ticket to Daddy's Home 2 >:o
That's all I'll say about that. Not going to blog about it like some millennial.
  • WBB 2 pm Sunday: Pepperdine @ the Aggies
The waves met the beach ? Doesn't that happen frequently in Malibu ?

Pepperdine is more likely to be tired going in. They had to travel.
  • Week 11: Southern Utah Thunderbirds
Was going to make a Jed Clampett reference, but it turns out that show was supposedly set in TN, so I would've been a cityfied moron to do that !

That's just obscene..paying $100,000 for the privilege of paying to occasionally having a place to crash for the night after attending a football game, yet another luxury. I consider it ridiculously luxurious for me to pay $100/night to stay at the Davis Best Western...so that's how ridiculous I think that is !
  • 2018 Aggies Prospective Lineup + Rotation
Now that I've seen a game, a couple new impressions:

I think they are trying to bring back Denholm as a catcher. I thought I saw him taking grounders at first base before the game, but he was catching for blue. I heard some whispering (though not quite whispered) among the team parents that he's still recovering from injury and is limited in his activities (isn't supposed to block balls in the dirt for example). I guess they'll monitor his progress, and if he's still limited come Feb. he'll probably play first/dh with O'Boy catching.

O'Boy did catch for Gold. He did a good job defensively considering the overall score. Didn't really have great at- bats, but I don't think any of the hitters are hitting like they would mid- season.

I didn't see anyone challenge the outfield fences. The extra- base hits were more a product of speed + hustle.

After seeing him pitch I don't think Wieser was the right guess at closer. Though Zach Stone used to start fall games and close in the regular season, I think it will be someone else, and Wieser's more likely to start or pitch in middle relief. He reminds me more of Blais as a freshman than Stone. Batters were making a lot of contact, but he was getting some weak ground balls hit to the third baseman/shortstop.

The left side of the infield (Plusckell + Briggs; Lara + Arenado) looked good defensively for both teams, bit it's early yet. The speed of the game and the speed at which those ground balls are hit will increase dramatically when the season starts.

Injuries seem to have depleted the roster a bit. I saw #11 sitting in the stands before the game when everyone else was on the field. If he kept the same # as last year I believe it was Ryan Steindorf who was sitting out. I know he missed the entire 2017 season. If it was due to a TJ surgery it would make sense for him to limit his activities. I seem to recall I didn't see Orlando Razo on the field very much before games when he was recovering from surgery in 2016.

  • 2018 baseball schedule- Updated 12/3 !
And we have confirmation on UCI's website. And that's the key piece of the puzzle, because it pegs CSUN as the only one for the 5/13, which then leaves ucsb as the last team without a home. Conferences Schedule= Complete !

Also St. Mary's released their schedule. 11 games unmasked in 1 day ! Truly a landmark day for UC Davis baseball message board schedule assembly !!!!!!
  • Women's BB Signs 2 Talented Guards for 2018-19
What I found impressive in that article was that McKeown is the first Aggie junior college player since the beginning of the Division I era..10 years! Of course they've had a few 4- year college transfers.

The men's team has had all kinds of transfers. Their best player is a JC transfer.

And how could we put together a football roster w/o JC players ?

I think it just goes to show that the women's basketball program is recruiting the right student-athletes from high schools, and they're sticking around for 4 years. As a result transfers aren't needed as much.
