• UCD extends agreement with American East Conference for field hockey
I interpret it differently. Two years is a very minimal commitment. I believe UCD is in wait-and see mode with respect to cutting programs, unlike some of its counterparts. If they cut field hockey they have to balance it by either providing another sport for women or cutting 1 or more men's sports. A lot of factors to consider. It seems logical to me that they're still weighing their options while they see how their fundraising and ticket revenue recover.
A few months is not really enough time to make the decisions.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say baseball will be around at least two more years too. It's not like they're telling Vaughn not to fundraise for facility improvements. However, I don't know what happens after Vaughn's contract expires. As I mentioned before Dobbins Stadium will still see plenty of use if there's no varsity team.
  • How Does It Feel Having No Fall Football?

"...like a rolling stone" -saw the opportunity for a pun there.

It's felt like one long season since mid-March. The only difference is the lower use of air conditioning.

I've adjusted pretty well. A little bored but it's a good time to start on projects. I swear everytime I see "Hoarders" I'm looking for something to throw out or recycle.
  • Fan Cutouts for Men's and Women's Basketball Games
I wonder if they plan on televising more games ? The point of the cut-out is to be able to see yourself on tv.

Kind of funny-students don't normally pay to attend, but it will cost them $25 to not attend.
  • 20/21 WBB conference schedule released
I believe they're still finalizing that part of their schedule. Since fans will likely not be admitted to most, if not all,of the out-of-conference games it's not as crucial they be given advance notice.

I am disappointed that Hawaii is on the schedule at all. It ruins the bus-only schedule, and the women'ss team will have to fly there with regular people who can get them sick. Also, Hawaii has been one of the states that has intentionally made it more difficult for travellers to visit so it would be funny if the Rainbow Warriors were forced to sit at home and play against themselves, or they could fill their schedule with Hawaii Pacific, Chaminade, and Hawaii-Hilo.
  • Sac opts out of spring football
I finished in 4 years thanks to taking GE's in Summer Sessions and testing out of some pre-requisites.. Could have done 3 3/4 if some classes were available earlier. Didn't play sports, but then again some student-athletes finish in 4 or less because they do the same things (even taking some junior college classes for GE's while in HS) and don't use all their eligibility. I didn't say student-athletes have to get the boot from the school after 4 years-just that the sometimes frivolous extension of eligibility is bad for intercollegiate athletics. Student-athletes are still expected to maintain full-time courseloads and make the appropriate academic progress. Not everyone finishes in 4 years but that 5th year shouldn't be a given. No one is entitled to use 4 years of eligibility-that's a privilege that has to be earned. Remember this discussion is not limited to UCD.

Glad to see you found a topic of interest. There are so many people redshirting on the sidelines here. Did you know charliesheen is a member ? I wouldn't mind asking them how anger management went.
  • Sac opts out of spring football
I agree. Greed unfortunately is at the center of this to a certain extent. Unfortunately some student- athletes out there feel entitled to play every second of eligibility rather than being grateful for the opportunities they were given to compete and possibly have their education partially paid for doing it. And so spots at the university are blocked in order to serve the vanity of some student- athletes who are putting off going into the real world.

They aren't the only ones. The universities can also be greedy if there's an opportunity to keep an exceptional player longer and profit off of them. The truth is that if it takes you 4+ years to be considered an exceptional college athlete that you're probably not as great as you think you are. How much of that is actual improvement and how much is just familiarity and taking advantage of less- prepared, younger opponents ? No way for fans to tell.

I would go further to say that the only people who should get an extra year are the ones who are losing their last year of eligibility due to COVID- 19- but only if you weren't already a 5th year senior. Everyone else still has opportunities ahead of them. I don't care if they get 4 seasons in which to compete. It's supposed to be like an assembly line- you take your classes, have your experiences, then you get out and give someone else a chance.

I also believe the 6th year of eligibility should only be given to student- athletes with truly serious hardships that prevent them from even attending classes. Injuries happen in sports- everyone knows that. COVID- 19 is really only a hardship If you or a family get it and you have to put your education on hold to deal with serious health problems/care for them. If you still get your scholarship money and get your degree that should be enough. Universities are under no obligation whatsoever to forward athletic careers. And no graduate students should be allowed to compete in NCAA sports. Graduate schools are intended to be for the top students in their fields who are looking to increase their preparation for real- world job opportunities, not for college athletes who just can't move on. No serious graduate student would have the time to practice for and compete in intercollegiate athleics- intramurals perhaps.
  • Donation drive
That's pretty common for baseball on Give Day. Lots of small donations from current players. I don't think it's unreasonable for them to donate $10- 20. That's giving up a couple meals out-no big deal.
  • Sac opts out of spring football
Those are legitimate concerns. UCD might as well do the same. Having seen MLB games with the safety measures and no fans was just not fun to watch.
  • Big 10 Coming back, Mtn West pushing, Boise St furloughs
You're right. That is pretty stupid. Sac State was going with a similar plan before the baseball season was called, only they included professional scouts.

How exactly do they intend to determine who's a relative and who isn't ? They'll probably go with a player pass list sort of deal but that counts on the player being honest. They could easily just put their friends on the pass list and claim they are siblings. Given most student- athletes live away from home being a parent or relative does not decrease the likelihood of having and spreading COVID- 19. I get that it's about limiting the size of the gathering, but their logic is faulty. They might as well just give each participating athlete (no redshirts) 4 tickets to invite whomever they wish.
  • Southern Utah to WAC?
I checked. Northern Colorado is only moving to the Summit League as an affiliate member for baseball- not leaving Big Sky after all. UMKC no longer is a WAC affiliate. Chicago State is cutting it's baseball team and might be considering moving to a different division.
  • 2020-21 Men's Basketball Schedule
I was reading that the money for the arena was provided by the late founder of Farmers' Insurance. Santa Clara is such a small school but with some crazy rich alumni.

I've only seen baseball there, but it's a top notch facility. You feel rich when you visit because of the swag. They seriously give away concert tickets at some games. The school information desk people are not very helpful though. Asked where the bookstore was- didn't know. It was closed anyway.

One thing I learned though- stay on the left side of campus and walk straight ahead until you pass the Bronco statue and leave the school entirely to find places to eat. I made the mistake of looking left and saw a building that looked like a bookstore from its entrance doors, so I started walking toward it...no, that was a girls dorm. Got a weird look but was able to reverse course before getting too close.
  • Southern Utah to WAC?
They would have a natural football rivalry every year with Dixie State. Big Sky basketball, even without UCD and Cal Poly, is too crowded. Some opponents they only play once a season. I believe Nothern Colorado is joining a different conference, and that includes football.

If I'm not mistaken Southern Utah doesn't sponsor baseball, but the WAC has members that don't (UMKC ?) so this doesn't make it any more likely that they will.
  • Future vacation destination suggestions ?
I changed my mind already about the destination. Lol
  • 2020-21 Men's Basketball Schedule
At the very least it's a placeholder. Wouldn't be surprised if there were more tournaments in the schedule in order to play the most games while minimizing trips.

I'm sure they'll play. More of a question whether or not spectators will be admitted. For the first half of the season my guess would be no..
  • MBB 2021 Commits
No kidding ? Cameron Niles is the name of a teller/personal banker at a neighborhood Wells Fargo branch. He's not 6'6 and too old to be in HS. Might be related though.
  • Interview with Coach Les About the 2020 Season
I agree with 69aggie- this seems fishy. Ypu have to be able to lift and move players but also lift supplies and equipment up to 50 lbs ? Well, which is it ? 50 lbs or athletes ? Pounds are pounds, and it's not as if any basketball student- athletes weigh 50 lbs or less. Maybe if this posting were for the gymnastics or equestrian teams....

Then it says the shift is Monday- Friday hours TBD but then the work hours are irregular including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Already contradicting themselves...

If you read this carefully it never explicitly states you have to know what a basketball is, just the NCAA rules and regulations, and coordinate the camps and clinics, and that may purely administrative. I call B.S. on this ad. It may be trying to steal your identity and before you know it some shady person in China has opened a credit card in your name and ordered 5 dozen Gunrock Halloween costumes and made a huge donation to Sac State in your name.
  • Future vacation destination suggestions ?
I read up on Pullman. Sounds like a really nice city. Looks like Alaska Airlines is the best airline to take.
  • Future vacation destination suggestions ?
I'm the same way. The stars have to really allign for anyone to be able to use the airplane restrooms. I vaguely remember using one back in the late 80's. That only happened because I was a child travelling alone and got to sit in the front. Whatever airline I was on (American or America West) was serving meals on a SF- Phoenix flight ? That might have been the trip where I met Yogi Berra (on the return). He was a Houston Astros coach then and there were some young men in suits with him- probably players.

I had to change planes both ways in Phoenix last time. You'd think an hour and 15 min is enough time to get your gate, eat something, and use the john. Not there. Had to cross no less than 6 moving walkways and haul behind.
  • Future vacation destination suggestions ?
Thanks. You know, that sounds very familiar. I think I might've even seen the Red Iguana on Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive- Ins, and Dives. I'll look up how to get there from my hotel.

Edit. Oh that's really easy. I can hop on Trax, followed by a 6 min ride and walking 2- 3 blocks. Nice ! I really like how so many of their stops are named after whatever place of interest is right next to them like Ballpark, Airport, Planetarium, etc..
  • Future vacation destination suggestions ?
Another visit to SLC is happening next month (planned in advance) Wouldn't mind seeing BYU, Utah Valley, or Weber State- in flyby fashion since college students are excellent at spreading COVID. I seem to be collecting visits to West Coast Conference schools (5 so far), so BYU would be quite appropriate. If the WCC dumped BYU and San Diego it could change its name to the NFC (No -Football Conference)

Too bad the Salt Lake Bees won't be playing. Smith's Ballpark is a great place to see a game if you like baseball but don't like strangers. Going on a Sunday most of the Mormon fans are MIA so you have legroom for days. It'd be nice if they didn't play "Safelite repair- Safelite replace !" after every foul ball. I saw former Aggie Ty Kelly play there. He couldn't buy a hit in that series, but he started a game- winning rally for the Las Vegas 51's by reaching on a fielding error.

I need to use up all those Southwest travel funds before Savannah, Fargo, or Missoula though. I know you can fly to Savannah from Atlanta (or another intermediate destination) on a different airline but Southwest will get you to Atlanta by way of Honolulu. I was looking at buying a ticket from Sacramento to Cleveland once. Practically every flight had a stopover in Baltimore. What ?
