• MBB: UCD vs. CSUN, Friday, Feb. 5, 4:00 pm
I heard on one of the broadcasts that in order to qualify for the NCAA tournament this year, a school has to play in 13 games. Does anyone know what counts toward that number? UCD will have played in 16 total assuming no more get cancelled. Two are against UCSD which is not a full conference member yet and one was against William Jessup, an NAIA (?) school. If those games don't count the Aggies can't afford to lose a single game to cancellation. If they--or any other Big West team--does not qualify, would they still be in the conference tournament? I can't imagine they wouldn't be, but I guess if they win it, the team they beat would go to the NCAAs, which sucks. I know that the odds are against such a scenario but I thought it would be worth raising the questions.

I should have noted a second game the next day broadcast on Big West TV. Game time is 2:00 PST, that's noon for all Hawaii fans.

Can't help mentioning that Koehler also committed a bad foul on a breakaway that gave UCSB 5 points on two made free throws and a triple. Oddly, he started the game off helping the Ags build a good lead by going 3 for 3 beyond the arc. I wonder why he didn't keep shooting. Question: Do any of you have your photo in those seats set up in the Pavilion? Wonder how one gets to be there?

I'm just glad I'm on blood pressure medication cause games like this are not good for me. The Ags deserved to win it, but I have to think they are still not at 100% of mid-season form, especially Manjon who made a solid effort in the second half and OT, finishing 6/11 after a slow start. So, UCD is now 0-3 officially in the Big West and are certainly not a last place team.

Aggies are playing very aggressively on defense and they have the fouls to show it. The good news is that Manjon seems to showing signs of the kind of play that made him a standout last year. Koehler is 3/3 from 3. Where did that come from?

Ags offense started off hot. They had almost as many points after only 5+ minutes as they did for the whole first half yesterday.

Aggies are now 12-32 all time against UCSB and if that's not bad enough, they are 6-15 at Davis, by far the worst home record against Big West teams. For a while I thought the Gauchos would better their biggest victory which was the 90-43 pounding back in 2012. Glad the Aggies came back strong showing some grit. I don't see them recording a W tomorrow.

Pasternack is a good coach. As soon as he saw his team getting sloppy, he called a timeout and the Ag rally faded.

Is it rust? Gauchos aren't playing tremendous defense.

I have never seen such an appalling display of poor shooting.
  • MBB: UC Davis at UC San Diego, Saturday, Jan. 23 2:00
Speaking of bad shots, I shot myself in the foot when I did not start watching until just before 2, because of the time I posted, which I put into my head as the Hawai`i time. When do kids learn to tell time? First grade? I think I need to repeat first grade or at least get a refresher on time zones. At least I got to see a win in the last minute. I heard near the end that this win will not count in the Big West standing, so I must have missed something they said earlier in the game. Can someone tell me why this game won't count, especially since UC Davis has lost so many conference games already?

Tritons unusually hot from 3 point range. Odds are they can't keep it up, but will the Ags sharpen their game at both ends enough to pull out a win?

Oldbanduhalum. Thanks. Hawaii is 2 hours later than California and I managed to flip the time in the wrong direction. I'm just happy when I get the right date.:chin:

What kind of shape will the team be in both in terms of conditioning and teamwork?
  • Basketball on Hold
I'd like to take the ever unpopular devil's advocate position here. Cal Aggie Men's basketball is far and away my favorite sport to watch ever since I watched my first game over 50 years ago. It is a major disappointment and, given what other schools have been able to do, very unfair to the fans and players. At the same time, I have been ambivalent about exposing these young guys to the virus. The effects of SARS-2 COVID 19 are known to be sometimes insidious and long term. The risk might be small, but can we weigh that in balance against something that is solely for the benefit of our enjoyment? I admit that I know nothing about the Yolo County Administration, but I find it hard to believe that their restrictions are aimed at UC Davis athletics.
  • Big West Conference Announces Move of 2021 Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships to Las Vegas
I must have missed something. Why are there only 9 women's teams and 10 men's teams in the tournament? Are the new schools ineligible this season? If so, why 10 men's teams?

I assume that "no contest" does not mean that the Aggies forfeit and take those four games as losses?

Hawaii's football team hosted UNLV this past Saturday and the basketball teams are under no restrictions against practicing, so there will be no problem with letting Big West teams come here, but Yolo County will probably not let any teams go there. I wonder if Sac State would be willing to let the Aggies practice and play there?
  • MBB: William Jessup at UC Davis, Friday, Dec. 4, 4:00 PST
Speaking of Sac State, while I can't disagree with AggieOutcast that they have few fans in Sacramento they are still a traditional Aggie rival. To underscore both points, I recall a game back in 1969 or 1970 when the Ags were in the thick of a conference title and played the Hornets in Sacramento. I went to the game with a bunch of my friends and found their gym overflowing with UCD students. The home team's bleachers had Aggies surrounding the small Sac State crowd on both sides. I felt almost sorry for the Hornets, whom we beat.

Hawaii is not shutting down so far. If the regular season get scuttled, maybe the Big West could open am NBA type bubble here for a tournament at least.
