  • MBB: UC Davis (0-0, 0-0) vs. Cal (0-0, 0-0) Mon. Nov. 7, 8 PM @ Berkeley
My top five men's basketball victories:

    1. 1998, beating Kentucky Wesleyan for the NCAA Div. 2 national title.
    2. 2017, NCAA Div.1 victory over North Carolina Central
    3. 2022, upset of Cal at Berkeley
    4. 2005, upset of Stanford at Davis
    5. 1969, defeat of San Francisco State away in double overtime to clinch FWC title. (Only reason for this was that I was there and the end was very exciting on a last second put-back by forward Bob Johnson.)

I'm out. I was hoping to see some of the depth here, but I don't think ESPN puts a lot of resources into these games. I hope the Loyola game is on a regular network. I didn't know that Pepper hurt his ankle. Does anyone know his prognosis?

    Nuts! I just jinxed it.
  • MBB: California Maritime Academy (0-3) at UC Davis (1-0) Wed. Nov. 9, 6 PM
It seems to be fixed now. No problems through the first several minutes of the second half.
  • MBB: California Maritime Academy (0-3) at UC Davis (1-0) Wed. Nov. 9, 6 PM
If ESPN+ hasn't fixed the brownouts by the second half, I'm just going to follow the game on the boxscore. I'm guessing everyone else has given up on it already.

Is it Ty Johnson or T. Y. Johnson?

    ESPN finally showing game stats.
  • MBB: California Maritime Academy (0-3) at UC Davis (1-0) Wed. Nov. 9, 6 PM
Broadcast seems to have settled down. Ags offense hasn't. Come to think of it, the defense is hardly sparkling. I agree with agalum, they're not taking CMA seriously. They have a big win hangover.

Dante Ross from the 1998 NCAA II championship team is doing the commentary.
  • MBB: California Maritime Academy (0-3) at UC Davis (1-0) Wed. Nov. 9, 6 PM
Pepper not starting. I did not hear a reason. Not a large crowd and no sailors in sight.

If you can't find the game, I suggest searching ESPN+ for UC Davis. It's there.
  • San Diego State May Be Moving to the PAC12
The thing about schools like Boise State and UNLV and even San Diego State is that they do not match the academic standards that the Pac-12 has had. BYU would be a match, but I'm hard pressed to think of any other western schools outside of Texas and Big-12 territory that would fit. BYU might want to rethink the Big-12 because they have a natural rivalry with Utah.

I wonder who else they might add? My guess would be Brigham Young. That would mean the Pac-12 South would be Arizona, ASU, BYU,SDSU, Colorado and Utah. That seems pretty odd.
  • MBB: UC Davis (0-0, 0-0) vs. Cal (0-0, 0-0) Mon. Nov. 7, 8 PM @ Berkeley
The start of the game reminded me of the 2013 game in Hawai`i in which Hawkins, Les, Sypkens, and Ritchart opened up by blitzing the Warriors with 3s from all over the place. I've never heard the Sheriff Arena so stunned. The Aggies wound up hitting over 60 from 3 and I personally got booed for wearing UCD colors and cheering wildly. I thought the opening, especially the 3s from Anigwe, was like that, but it didn't hold up. In fact, Pepper was 0 for 3. It's never good to rely on the treys (unless your in the NBA) but last night they didn't. I don't know if I've ever seen a better all around game from the Aggies at this level. I mean, shooting, rebounding, defense and keeping turnovers and fouls to a reasonable level. The one take away I had overall is that this Aggie team is very quick. Cal looked slow, so perhaps it was simply a contrast, but we'll see. I do not expect CMA to test that theory at all. Maybe we should all withhold judgment until we play UCLA in January, although Loyola Marymount will be a good test.

Anyone else notice that the play-by-play guy kept calling Ty Johnson T. Y. Johnson?
  • MBB: UC Davis (0-0, 0-0) vs. Cal (0-0, 0-0) Mon. Nov. 7, 8 PM @ Berkeley
I had to pause for dinner out here, but I watched in some disbelief to see the Ags pull this one out. Upset for sure, but Cal is not expected to do well in the Pac-12. Maybe 10th. Still, it's nice to end a 33 game loss streak, with 32 of those having come in Berkeley. Previous closest game was in 1984: 63-69. Ags did a great job with steals, especially Pepper with 4, and on the glass where they maintained an edge of 40-34. Mostly, I was impressed by their poise and how well they played as a team. The trip to Europe was probably critical. Still, I remember last year, when they started off really hot (beating Utah State, Pacific and Oregon State all on the road) but then went into a funk when Big West play started.

    Wonder what happened to Borra?
  • MBB: UC Davis (0-0, 0-0) vs. Cal (0-0, 0-0) Mon. Nov. 7, 8 PM @ Berkeley
Cal's defense getting tougher and the Ags outside shots have stopped falling, but they're out-rebounding the bigger Bears 18-11. They need to stop trying to force shots inside.

Looks like Anigwe has been working on his J. Ags perfect from 3 so far and leading Cal 27-21!
