  • MBB: California Polytechnic (7-12, 1-6) at UC Davis (11-8, 4-3) Sat., Jan. 21, 3:00 pm
After leaving 12 points at the free throw line and having their best player hobbled, it was unbelievable that they could go on a 15-0 run at the end to pull it out. All credit to T Y Johnson, who provided the spark. Great clutch steals and drives to the hoop. The game winner came over a 7-1 center. A loss wold have been a disaster, so it was huge that they could pull it out. Nice crowd too, That might've helped.

You know we're in trouble when Adebayo is the leading scorer.

This is getting ugly. It looks like the Aggies are disheartened and came out flat and sloppy. They need some kind of spark, because Cal Poly is playing out of their minds so far at both ends of the court, leading 19-7 with 7:42 left in the first half.

This is from UCSD's website: "The Big West Board of Directors approved the submission of a waiver to the NCAA that, if approved, would allow UC San Diego to participate in NCAA Championships beginning this fall should the Tritons earn The Big West automatic bid in applicable sports. In addition, the conference approved UC San Diego to be included in the men's basketball standings beginning this season."

Williams frequently mentions the need for Ade to put the ball up more often because not ding so means that defenses sag off on his team-mates. I'm sure that Jim Les understands that and has probably pushed Ade to show more offense. Even trying a 3-point shot at the start of the game would help. And here I speculate: Maybe Les gave Ade that play BECAUSE the Highlanders would least expect him to be shooting at that point?

Hard to find anything "wrong" with the way the Aggies played. It was close the whole second half, back and forth and UCR happened to be ahead at the end. I note that neither Borra nor Mani got in the game to counter the Highlanders bigs, so Coach Les must have little faith in them. Ags got 34 rebounds, only 2 less than UCR.

I;ll have to watch it about an hour after it starts due to a scheduling conflict.
  • MBB: UC Davis (10-7, 3-2) at UCSD (6-11, 1-4) Mon. Jan. 16 at 3:00 pm
One big difference between the turnovers today and in previous games: Today, many of the turnovers were due to the two guards trying to force the ball inside. Previously, many of them were due to sloppy passing.

Whew! Am I glad their free throw shooting has improved.

Ags only have 1 TO in second half.

Ags coming back. Plus they're doing a great job of defending free throws. Tritons only 4/9.

The Triton offense is looking very good. I noticed a large number of their points came around the rim where they were beating the Aggie defender one-on-one with some pretty good moves. Meanwhile, TY needs to start playing under control. A too often ignored quality of a basketball game is simply hustle and the Ags are getting out-hustled.

I wonder is the UC schools will ever go to using the city names as some other state system schools have done (UNC Charlotte > Charlotte, SUNY Albany > Albany, Wisconsin-Milwaukee > Milwaukee)? I'm sure Cal will stay Cal and UCLA will stay UCLA. San Diego would be a problem, since there is a USD but as Dr. Mike just shorthanded, why not just Riverside, Santa Barbara, Davis, Irvine, etc.?
  • MBB: CSU Fullerton (9-8, 3-2) at UC Davis (9-7, 2-2) Sat., Jan. 14, 2:00 pm
So Long Beach gives Hawai`i a battle despite not getting in to Honolulu until the wee hours of the morning. UCR upsets UCSB, but they in turn got knocked off by Fullerton who lost to us. UCI remains undefeated, but their only hallmark victory was in Davis. It's beginning to look like the Big West is going to be real dog fight among the top 6 or 7 teams and you know what they say about winning a dog fight: It's not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog.

Yes, ESPN had a woman doing some sideline reporting. I didn't catch her name or recall what she said.

I stopped watching when I saw the half time score for the 49ers and I caught up to the live action with 30 seconds left. Now 6 seconds and I could do without this tension. It's admirable how well the Aggies have hung on. One more set of free throws.
  • MBB: CSU Fullerton (9-8, 3-2) at UC Davis (9-7, 2-2) Sat., Jan. 14, 2:00 pm
The two teams seem pretty evenly matched. DeBruhl looking good. Pepper getting a lot of old-fashioned 3-point plays. Seems like his 3-pt. shot has not been on for quite awhile now, 0-2 so far today.

49ers already up 10-0. Looks like you we're right! Time for Aggie basketball!

    Yes, eminent domain.

I remember the first time my room-mate and I tried to go to an Aggie home game on a double date. It was a rainy and cold January night, but we were determined to go. We got there just before tip off. We had no idea that the gym would be packed and we couldn't get in. Of course, the old Men's gym was a lot smaller, but so was the enrollment. Too bad the students today (all 35,000) aren't as zealous.
