• 49ers sign Colby Wadman as replacement punter
Your hope was answered, but Wadman might have done better than Wishnowsky as things turned out.
  • MBB & WBB: New Covid Cancellations and Fan Restrictions
I've read that the omicron virus sweeps through the population very quickly, leaving as quickly as it arrives. I hope that is the case and things start to feel better by mid-January.
  • MBB & WBB: New Covid Cancellations and Fan Restrictions
Hawaii has cancelled the game with UC Davis for this Thursday.
  • MBB & WBB: New Covid Cancellations and Fan Restrictions
The Hawaii team has 3 players down with injuries but only on with the virus. The game with UC Davis has not yet been cancelled, but I can't recommend flying out here for the game. I'm going to check on Monday to see if I can get a refund on my ticket in any case, even if the game isn't cancelled, which is probable because, as DrMike noted, Hawaii as a whole has been very strict.
  • MBB: Portland (8-6) at UCD (6-3) 2 pm Wednesday 12.22
They needed to shut down Wood and did. Ironically, Wood's only points in the second half sealed the game. Trouble was not only Pepper's cold shooting, but the hot shooting of Robertson and Meadows for Portland. Pilots hit 52.4% from 3. Just one of those days.

Looks like the Ag's strategy is to deny Wood the ball. Anigwe is playing hims very close. I counted that he only got one touch in the first 4 minutes of the second half.
  • MBB: Portland (8-6) at UCD (6-3) 2 pm Wednesday 12.22
Moses Wood of Portland has 16 points in one half. He's 7 of 8 from the floor with 2 3s. Needless to point out that he's keeping his team in the game. Regression to the mean suggests that he will cool off in second half.
  • MBB: Portland (8-6) at UCD (6-3) 2 pm Wednesday 12.22
ESPN's power index gives UC Davis a 67.4% chance of beating Portland. I dunno, the Pilots have balanced scoring as well as height. four of their starters are averaging in double figures.
  • MBB & WBB: New Covid Cancellations and Fan Restrictions
I have a ticket for the Dec. 30 game in Hawaii and now have serious qualms about going. I'm boosted and always wear a mask indoors, though, so the only way I won't go is if they cancel the game or block fans from attending. I'd really like to see the Ags play because I think there's a good chance they'll get a rare road win against Hawaii. Plus I haven't been to any game in two years. I agree with agalum that this is getting really old. Does anyone know how the Spanish flu pandemic was ended in an era of no vaccines and very poor public health practices?
  • MBB: Pacific (5-7) at UCD (5-3) 12:00 Noon Sunday, Dec. 19
Manjon really impressed the commentators at both Pacific and the Pac-12 guys doing the Oregon State game. The color guy for the Oregon State game was Eldridge Recasner who said that Ezra reminded him of himself, which is an immodest statement until you check and see that he was an all conference point guard for three years at Washington.
  • MBB: Pacific (5-7) at UCD (5-3) 12:00 Noon Sunday, Dec. 19
It never got as close as it did in the first game, even though the final score makes it look a lot closer than it was. The Spanos arena never did get many fans. If the Tigers play as poorly as they have against us, I can see why not many of their students or alumni show up. Got another WCC team coming to Davis on Wednesday.
  • MBB: Pacific (5-7) at UCD (5-3) 12:00 Noon Sunday, Dec. 19
Not sure whether Ags are this good or Pacific is just bad.
  • MBB: Pacific (5-7) at UCD (5-3) 12:00 Noon Sunday, Dec. 19
Bailey has yet to score. Aggies out-rebounding Pacific 16-7. Tigers look very sloppy.
  • MBB: Pacific (5-7) at UCD (5-3) 12:00 Noon Sunday, Dec. 19
This is beginning to look the same as the previous game. Ags are beating the Tigers in every aspect of this game in the first half, now up 24-11
  • MBB: Pacific (5-7) at UCD (5-3) 12:00 Noon Sunday, Dec. 19
Watching on WCC Network. The place is practically empty!
  • IM Program at UC Davis
One last comment about IM sports at UCD: They were very quick and eager to allow women to play sports, including flag football and "regular" basketball. When I first got there, women were playing an odd 6 person game where only two guards were allowed to cross center court, making it a 4 on 4 game. Each player could only dribble the ball 3 times, all in the name of "saving" the women from overdoing it. As I recall that was abandoned by 1969.

The football program caught the eye of the 49ers and a friend of mine told me she was going to play during halftime of a pre-season game, Niners v. Denver Broncos. I went down to Candlestick to watch her and her team play for about 5 minutes at halftime. Davis must have had one of the few, if not the only, such program at that time, to get the attention of an NFL team.
  • MBB: Aggies (4-3) at Oregon State (1-8) 7 PM Tuesday 12/14
I was impressed at how Coach Les drew up some really nice back-door and in-bounds plays for easy buckets. I don't understand how the Beavers kept letting the Aggies get those easy plays. Wayne Tinkle is a really good coach and the team has been playing too long not to be playing better defense.

Now UC Davis has beaten two teams that went to the NCAA tournament last year. Of course, that was last year and clearly Oregon State (very oddly) is a shadow of last year's team. Utah State, however is now 7-3 with wins over Oklahoma and Richmond. I don't know what happened against Sac State and Academy of Art, but this edition of UCD Men's basketball is good.
  • MBB: Aggies (4-3) at Oregon State (1-8) 7 PM Tuesday 12/14
It's great to see Manjon being so aggressive and scoring in a variety of ways. he had really impressed the color guy, Eldridge Recasner, who was a pretty good point guard at Washington himself. Hard to believe that Oregon State went to the Elite Eight last year. Ags aren't looking to shoot from 3 much , maybe because they can't stop the Aggies inside game?
  • MBB: Aggies (4-3) at Oregon State (1-8) 7 PM Tuesday 12/14
Curry has forced my viewing of this game into a later viewing for me.

The other great thing about intramural sports at UCD was the way they were given coverage by the Cal Aggie. I think I even got my name in the paper once for a softball game I did unusually well in. The Cal Aggie not only printed thumbnails of some of the games, but scores and league standings. They even had top ten rankings in football and basketball. I wonder if or how long they continued to do that? I was associated or familiar with three other universities where intramural coverage in the student paper was either non-existent or minimal (announcements about seasons or playoff schedules only).
