Checking back, I did notice that there were a lot more posts for Aggie men's basketball back in the 2017-19 era. Had mostly to do with winning. If you win it, they will come.

It's kind of disappointing to me that the men's basketball team has only had a fraction of the interest on this talk group that the football team does. Or for that matter, as much as they got in past years. I can certainly appreciate the strong interest in Aggie football, as well as the team has done for decades, but it's not a zero sum game. Not sure what has happened to the basketball fans. Are they out there and just not posting or has their record of late kept the fans away?

Always to get a road game win, but especially in the Thunder Dome. Good team play by the Ags. They had 6 players in double figures and all 8 players who got in the game had at least one rebound. Most importantly, the team defense was really solid after the first five minutes or so. Seems like Coach les has settled into an 8 man rotation of guys who can play that kind of D?

Getting some fortunate bounces to move into a 7 point lead with 4 minutes left. Still a long way to go.

Ags outside shooting has really been up and down, but at this point with the score tied at 70, they're only 12 of 30 from 3. UCSB is 11 of 20.

The Santa Barbara broadcast team of Max Kelton and Louis Reynaud is one of the better ones in the conference, I think. They're knowledgable about the game, well prepared and objective while still making it clear who they're rooting for.

Aggies ran into a Little bad luck with the return of #1 as the UCSB point guard. In my preview comments I noted that there was no timetable for his return, but... Of course, the Gauchos opened with a hot hand that reminded me too much of Jaden Alexander of Cal State Bakersfield. I was thinking "Oh no, not again." Good thing the Aggie turned up the defense and the Gauchos cooled off. You have to love the tenacity of the Aggie players.

Bad start. Gauchos shooting 87% in first 4 minutes.

I notice that the tab for members has been taken down. Is there a problem?

Seems like he's been doing that in a lot of games this year. Maybe he should go to platoons like Bob Hamilton once did.

So Jadan Alexander who has been averaging about 6 points a game and does not usually start, gets into the zone and goes off for 35. An unpredictable event, but the coach must have sensed something. Ags didn't help themselves in the second half as they had twice as many turnovers as the Runners and I already noted the free throw shooting discrepancy. All the other stats were about equal. Quiet dayu for the fans. Guess everyone is gearing up for the 49ers.

Ags down by 6 with less than 2 minutes to go. I sure didn't expect this. #25 and #10 are killing us.
  • MBB Cal State Bakersfield (6-8) at UC Davis (8- 5), Saturday Jan. 3, 2 pm, on ESPN+
The refs are calling it way too close on both ends. This favors Bakersfield so far, in the sense that they are shooting foul shots better than usual while the Aggies are shooting it worse than usual.

This is why I thought the 10.5 spread was too big. The Roadrunners are better than their record or preseason expectations. On the other hand, madcity is right. CSUB lacks depth, so the number of fouls hurts them more than the Aggies whose fouls afre more distributed due to their depth.

I've noticed that Rocak wins a lot of the opening tips, not because he jumps high, but he gets up very quickly. I think that is also a factor in the way he can block shots. Plus he has uncanny timing.

UC Davis rates a 10.5 spread over CSUB. I'm a little skeptical of that spread. If I were a betting person, I would take the Roadrunners to lose by a single digit number. Meanwhile, watch out for Hawai`i. They beat Riverside 88-45 at UCR.
  • MBB CSUN (8-6) at UC Davis (7-5), Thursday Jan. 1, 2 pm, on ESPN+
I was surprised by the margin of our victory, because I expected a much closer game. In fact, it easily could have been a double digit win, but the Ags let up on defense near the end. Hitting 50% from the 3-point line was a huge factor. CSUN missing 10 foul shots was another. I don't think either of those can be something to depend on.
  • MBB CSUN (8-6) at UC Davis (7-5), Thursday Jan. 1, 2 pm, on ESPN+
38-35 Aggies at the half. The only concern is with the rebounding margin so far, but that's not a surprise given the Matadors strength in that area. If the Aggies can keep making 3s at a high rate, this game should be a W.

    The arena is pretty empty.
