• Yanez tranfers to Oregon
YES, THIS COULD BE VERY DEPRESSING FOR THE TEAM. IS THIS A SCHOLARSIP THING? DID WE GIVE HER A FULL? DOES ANYONE IN WSB D1 GET A FULL? IT IS REALLY SORRY TO SEE A D1 PROGRAM LIKE OREGON TAKE ANOTHER D1 PLAYER LIKE THIS. NOT GOOD FOR THE SPORT IMHO.
  • Tailgate/season pass renewal
We may be a bit behind the times. SEC just approved the general sale of alcohol at all league events. TAM to sell alcohol to the general public next football season; I guess just like going to a 49er game. League says this will be a benefit and will prevent “binge drinking” before games. OK, I guess so. . . . Only in Texas?
  • No men's basketball end of season "banquet"?
More on the Leslie Gottlieb- Cal WBB coach situation. Although she was mostly a well liked and admired coach, many Cal WBB fans are not that unhappy that she is leaving. She was a very highly paid coach of a non-revenue sport (maybe highest in the PAC-12?) and did very well in her first years at Cal, but in the second half of her tenure at Cal she was only 56-52 and all along had what was thought to be among the most highly talented and athletic teams in the PAC-12. Yes, the Cal job would be attractive to anyone, but it would be a tough job. Already there are some decommits and transfers out. As for the salary question, one Cal fan said it best Cal cannot pay it (Gottlieb’s salary) to the new coach because “we are broke!” Thats for another story, but it is true Cal’s entire athletic program is in big financial trouble and will effect the recruiting process.
  • No men's basketball end of season "banquet"?
Cal friend’s comment on this development: “Cal hires a Davis Coach? Give me a frig- - - break.” ; he later adds: “no. Never. They are way too petty and dumb to do something smart like that. Remember back in the day when Stanford actually considered hiring Jim Sochor as their new football coach? The alumni had a fit (led by John Brodie) said Jim was not “Stanford material.” Be forever grateful for unasked for stupidity that actually aids you.
  • No men's basketball end of season "banquet"?
UC Berkeleys Woman’s head BB coach, Lindsay Gottlieb, was just hired by the Cleveland Cavs. First woman to be an assistant coach in the NBA. This is great, but I am now extremely nervous with a vacancy like that so close our WBB program.
  • The Fate of the Grad
The only person who could find out why this actually happened is Bob Dunning and he seems not to be real interested. Actually, the lease could be why they were not making money and maybe was a way the present ownership could force them out. If so, very bad PR for the ownership people. Also, didn’t they have another place in Chico? Or am I confusing them with someone else. In any case, this is a very bad development for Davis and the student population. “The Grad” was an only in Davis type institution. I dearly hope someone will step up with a replacement; but the location was such a major part of its popularity and I guess that’s just gone at this point. Very sad indeed.
  • The Fate of the Grad
The divorce? The lease? Can’t be that they weren’t making money. Is there any hope someone else could take it over. So sad. Bob D. Never got on this. Bet he will new.
  • Women's soccer coach resigns
And now we learn that she is a celebrity as well playing herself in the award winning movie “Coach, the Movie.” Her life story is truly remarkable as reported by the UC Davis Athletics website yesterday. The movie is basically the story of how she obtained her “A” coaching license by overcoming amazing odds and outright discrimination by US Soccer. This is a very charismatic person and we are lucky to get her. AD Blue is to be commended for landing her.
  • Did Peter Snell run for UC Davis?
Kudos to Aggie Erinn Beattie for placing fifth in the NCAA Championships heptathlon event. This grueling event is something most sane people or sane athletes would not even attempt. I love these athletes who put so much on the line here and I doubt they really even get full schollies to reach this point. Anyway, hope the best for the talented and beautiful Erinn (yes, she could be model!- but won’t). She’s a world class athlete.
  • WBB Signs High Scoring 6'5 Center
Don’t forget Sanders. She didn’t play much last year, but when she did she did well for a Frosh player. I think the freshman 15 caught up with her a bit and slowed her down. She will be fitter next year. She showed she can bring the ball the up the court very well. I think she made the only 3 she attempted. I will never second guess Jen, but maybe a RS year for her? She also is a very good rebounder. I think we are good at the 4-5. Trpcic and Hall/Bessolo/Song?
  • WBB Signs High Scoring 6'5 Center
I have no problems with the back court next year. Sanders will be trimmer and faster , Trepcic will be a force to be reckoned with. Wings in good shape. Post: lets see with Stobbart I think we are in good shape there as well. The new bigs should probably RS this year to be an incredibly strong team in 2020. IMHO. Jen will stay as well. She is a force to be reckoned with Nationally. Blue knows this as do all of us. But she is loved here. I think it would take a lot to get her to move.
  • Looking Forward to 2019
Just a suggestion, but if you have some time to spare some boring afternoon like me today, check out the videos of new QB recruit Trent Tompkins. Now I am fully aware of the false hype that Maxi-preps and others do for players, but if you go the the UC Davis Football Roster site and then go to Tompkins and go to his bio you will get a much different view (“Passportsplayas TV”). At the start this is not good for Trent. He is sacked. He is roughed up big time. But he perseveres. Definitely not the perfect player. But then as the season progresses against some very, very tough teams he show his stuff. Good footwork, deception, quickness, ability to run the football and a great passing arm, in a very unconventional form, as he does not need the balls stitches to throw the football. Which, of course, drives the coaches crazy. And, there is more good stuff about how the college player rating system is so weird, i.e. if he were 1-2” inches taller, based on his national stats he would have been a 5 star recruit. Reminds me of that short kid named Peterson. Or that short kid Kahari. Good job by the Aggies to land this kid. I think we got a true stud here.
  • I guess I'm not really done. Sorry for the rant.
Sac’s baseball program is going great. Multi 30 win seasons; this year 40. Regionals winner. A vastly better program than we have going now. Time for AD Blue to pick up Aggie baseball with some facilities and program improvements. We have done WSB And WFH improvements which is a great accomplishment, but we need Aggie baseball to rise up. We used to be a great BB school, now not so. Much. Why?
  • Morgan Bertsch to Play in Russia
Wow, WNBA pays less than what Morgan could have earned as a starting biomedical engineer. Median BME starting salary: $53,800. WNBA: $49,440. Where ever Morgan goes she will do very well. Love that gal. Morgan just don't get too chummy with Vladimir.
  • Bad press for the Band-Uh!
This is going to be a tough investigation for the attorney who takes on this task. Because there are many, many Banduh alums who will write about all the good things their band membership did for them personally. Yes, there will be some obviously who will write differently, but I think in the end the Band will come out of this OK. So no one was killed. Raped or beaten. Mostly hurt feelings, but thats not good either. We have to stop that.
But basically, my view is that college band controversies are actually very, very funny. Let’s take the Tree vs. the Cal Band. The Stanford Tree is universally regarded and hated as the worst mascot in the country, but Stanford students love their tree. The Cal Band hates the tree with a passion. I recall at Picnic Day not too long ago at the Battle of the Bands, the Tree got too hot and went to the van to remove the Tree suit. Cal BAND broke into the van and stole the Tree suit. Charges filed. No outcome.suspensions . Then at a later Cal event a very inebriated Tree intimidated and outraged Oski to the extend that Oski fake peed on the Tree. Turned out the Tree had a bottle of vodka inside her suit. Suspension. Later, the Tree with help from the Stanford Band attacked Oski and removed his head showing the face of the student. This was a gross violation of the 100 year old Cal rule that Oski was to be forever “unknown”. Suspensions again. Need i go on? This is not “kids will be kids” thing it is that some shy, insecure, but very artistically talented young adults go thru a late bonding and maturation process that draws them to something like the community of the Banduh. It is good for them. Fix it don't kill it.
  • Bad press for the Band-Uh!
The great bee of yore, investigational pioneers against the big banks and the big 5 railroads of the 1890’s, now frantically yipping at the heels of a nerd college band. Sad. Basically, what newspapers have to do now if they need a story (and they have a college close by) is go to the college newspaper, which the bee did. The Aggie did this not the poor bee. So sad, the Stanford band, the cal band, USC band, the Poly band, and then us. Yes, a minor nerd college band problem, but really “front page”? But fire the Banduh? no way. . . . .
  • The good and bad of this season.
Good to know. Based on his record, I bet he got some “encouragement” that things have to get better fast when he was given that extension. Well they didn’t in 2019. We will see what a fairly young team now can do for him next year. That said, we have been through these 4 year rotations with Vaughn before and they have really never paid off. One fact I did not note before is that after Peters got to UCLA the team batting average gained 41 points! Ours fell. We will see. . .
  • The good and bad of this season.
Well, if we are “fully funded” we are out of excuses* for being one of the weakest baseball teams in the BWC. I believe that Matt Vaughn has had one winning season in the past 5 years (2015) and was 46-67 before that (I dont have those individual season stats handy). Compared to the previous head coach, Rex Peters, this is not an admirable record for a head coach. Peters is now an assistant coach at UCLA which is the number 1 seed in its regionals. I have no idea where Vaughn is contract-wise, but it would seem a coaching review is probably definitely in order for this coach.
    * i guess we can still blame lack of lighting for this situation, but its getting pretty weak at this point. Strange it is, as UC Davis has a great facility and used to field very good baseball teams.
  • Bad press for the Band-Uh!
I Get it. A bit more complicated than I thought. But the point that must be acknowledged is that the Band is still very popular with the students and the community. Didn’t BWC ban the band from away games because it was so formidable a foe in the opposition gym.? That’s big.
  • Bad press for the Band-Uh!
If they wanted to, the band could just start a petition signed by all who agree that this is all just a bunch of BS and let it go at that. Of course with a clear statement that it was not done with any coercion. Is this just too simple? Probably. . . . However, I do think that the Alumni may be a problem and they should just butt out of the bands activities. Why do they want to hang lout with a bunch of 18-20 year olds? A bit creepy don’t you think?
