• 2023 Season Preview
Watching the demise of the PAC-12 is very depressing
Might seem off thread, but it is not as we play Oregon State this season. And Oregon State will soon be without a conference. As more schools are expected to follow Oregon and washington to leave the PAC12 the future for Oregon State is grim. Growing up in Palo Alto as a kid I went to all the Stanford games and parked cars before the games (got in after the first quarter!) The PAC10 then was a powerhouse conference. I loved it. Now the pac 12 is being reduced to a memory for me. Is this the future for big time college football? It’s apparently going to be all for the TV money, nothing for the fans or for the players. Very sad. I hope Teresa Gould lands in a good spot. I loved her work at davis and I have no doubt she will continue her success. Same for Ron a very good guy.
  • Why is UCD baseball so unpopular ?
Yeah, my guess is that Rocko has had a conversation with BBHC that went something like this: you win some games for me then we talk about lights. Sounds reasonable to me. WS has done so much better than BB and of course is just next to the BB field. So a joint project is needed. Frankly I would have the WS coach head this negotiation and there is no doubt she is much more shall we say “interesting to look at” than our new BB coach. Check her out, she has a great personal story and she is fiercely dedicated to her sport.
  • Why is UCD baseball so unpopular ?
AggieFinn2 the only student’s who benefited from the IM lights were IM participants and many davis students are not IM players. So I realize IM might be more important for the students than BB, but then why lights on the football stadium and not woman’s soccer. What we really need is a statement from Rocko as to where this issue is going. Can’t lose BB per BW rules. The idea of cutting other sports is not realistic. BTW don’t lose the fact that over time davis woman’s sports have always over performed men’s sports. Especially women’s basketball over men’s which we all know too well. Tough times for an AD these days……
  • Why is UCD baseball so unpopular ?
The lack of lights is just a stunner in my view. Even the IM fields have lights. Did we have to have a rich alum to pay for the IM lights? No. Plus there appears to no real interest in getting the lights done, by let’s say, a campaign to fund the lights. I think a lot of alums would sign on for a few hundred to get that going. Does anyone know what Rocko’s thought are on this subject?
I know BB is a nonrevenue sport, but to not to finish off what in many ways is the best college BB stadium in the west with lights Is nothing short of stupid. IMHO.
  • 2023 Preseason FCS Football Polls
I agree that these preseason polls are close to worthless, especially the media polls. But both the Aggies and sac are highly rated in both polls and that simply shows what we already know. Both teams will be very good next season. I. Terms of schedule I think sac has drawn the hardest one in the conference with both montanas and the Aggies. The Aggies probably the easiest. I think sac will be a formidable opponent because of their returning defensive players. I also think Fulcher is a very dangerous RB. Question for sac is the new coach and the new QB Camp. As I have posted before I think camp is somewhat over rated but we will see. I think we will all be pleasantly surprised by Larison at RB full time. The guy is a total gamer.
  • USD Torero HC laid off, new HC hired
It’s not that hard. Just keep the weight down. Don’t drink too much. Don’t smoke. Go to the gym for a light workout enjoy and your family and relax. Also, eat well with lots of vegetables.
At 82 I am entitled to say this. Love you guys and I’m thinking the Aggies are going to be great this season.
  • Sochor's Coaching Tree
As I said, I was at that game and saw the play. You can tell when an injury is common and recovery is probable as to what the medical staff does. But when the injury is catastrophic as this one was (and this was the only time I have ever witnessed such an injury) it is like the air goes out of the stadium. Sirens coming, Ambulance on the field, etc. I just got up and left. I don’t even know if the game was finished as everyone was so emotionally distressed by the event. BUT the thing that later affected me the most is what effect it had on Coach Socher. He was devastated by the event. As I mentioned earlier even the plaintiffs attorney felt very sorry for Coach Socher and said so publicly. Coach was cross examined for several hours in front of a very plaintiff oriented oakland jury. How do your answer this question: “did you think you coached enough on the way to tackle another player”? If so, explain why this tragic incident happened”. Horrific day for a very great coach.
  • 2023 Recruits?
I believe the slater brothers did as well. Alooong time ago!
  • 2023 Recruits?
Isn’t it just about impossible to play BB and FB in the same season since the schedule of both sports overlap?
  • 2024 Football Recruiting
Looking at some interesting stats going into the 2023 season. Miles Hastings is ranked #11 at QB with a rating of 154.23. Carson camp not listed. His rating is 113.1. He suffered a big drop off in performance after the 2021 season. Take out his blowout win against Poly and his rating would be even lower. That is obviously the reason he was demoted. Not saying he is not a good QB, but I think sac has over hyped him. Other somewhat interesting RB stats: Larisons yards per carry was 7.5 on 75 carries. Gilliams was 6.0 on 196 carries. Not disagreeing that Gilliam is the GOAT Aggies RB, just think that we will be OK at RB next season and at QB.
  • Sochor's Coaching Tree
Mark Johnson! Great player and great coach. Now at American River College. My memory comes back if I take a few deep breaths and relax. Anyone have any input on that. The memory loss is of some concern too. E.
  • Sochor's Coaching Tree
Wasn’t there a kid named Johnson whom played for Sochor and then coached the freshman team. My memory is not good that far back. Does anyone remember the tragic case of the Aggie player who was rendered paralyzed in a freshman game? I was there and saw it. Just a hard hit that went horribly wrong. In the lawsuit Sochor had to testify in Oakland. The plaintiffs attorneys were so kindful of Sochor in their examination of him at trial that the lead attorney later said it was not Sochor’s fault for the dreadful accident. I don’t know their theory at trial but I think it was just you don’t put 18-20 year oldsagainst 20-23 year old JCs players who were bigger and probably more athletic. Bad idea.,kid won. Sochor later said it was one of the worst experiences of his career.
  • USC & UCLA leave Pac12 - what does this mean for west coast sports?
Well, i don’t think the Hawaii papers have factored in the increased costs of the travel involved in a transition to the MWC either. But I think the Hawaii AD has. We’re talking about multiple teams now traveling to Wyoming, Colorado State, AFA, New Mexico? Most of which are non revenue sports. I have no idea how Hawaii teams even get to Wyoming, New Mexico etc. without a few plane changes and a long bus ride. Won’t happen in MHO. Unless the Hawaii AD is a complete idiot. I agree with dr Mike that the Hawaii membership with the BWC is a big pain in the butt.
  • USC & UCLA leave Pac12 - what does this mean for west coast sports?
Last week SDSU served a formal notice that it is leaving the mountain west conference. Which many believe is the first step in SDSU joining the pac 12 conference. The significance of this to the big west is that this opens a spot in the MWC and Hawaii according to the local papers is very interested in taking that spot in the MWC for all sports. We will see. Keep watching. . .
  • Coach Gould
Hope Teresa is doing OK. Must be hard on her and the kids. She actually was a great interim AD for us. Ron I just do not know how he will do.
  • Aggie Baseball Scores Thread 2023
BW CEOs announce that baseball will get a playoff tournament next year. Adds mens and woman’s swimming as new BW sports. We dropped MS years ago. Kept WS. Wonder if Rocko can find a way to add back MS and comply with TIX. Probably doubtful? Or he could add back woman’s rowing too and that might fix the problem. Again doubtful. I always thought the dropping of rowing was a shameful decision as we consistently had very strong rowing teams. But money rules the day as they say.
  • 2024 Football Recruiting
I agree, But why was he pushed out by a sophomore? Somethings just not right here.
  • 2024 Football Recruiting
I noted earlier the post that sac states QB recruit Carson camp was a huge get for them. And it may be. They did have to replace two of their QBs to graduation. And they apparently have done that. Well done! But on closer examination Carson was not considered South Dakota’s best QB by the end of the season. Sophomore Aidan Bouman was their best QB statistics and leadership considered. So I believe that’s why he transferred. Shows how the portal works nowadays and all things considered is probably a good thing. I believe Miles Hastings will be every bit as good as Carson come next season. But sac did do well on their getting Carson. Also shows what a great football recruiting area the mid west is these days.
