  • WBB: Boise State (2-1) at the Aggies (1-1) 2 p.m. Thursday 11/17
The women did best when they were able to run. Toward the end of the game Jen made the decision to slow the whole thing down, we lost momentum and allowed the Broncos to came back at us. Shooting in Q4 was not great by either team and for Boise it was awful.

The Broncos show a LOT of free throws missing only a couple. The Ags should only about half as many but still only missed 2. So good work from the line.

It was a very entertaining game the watch. After Q1 I thought we'd see 100 but that ground to a halt very quickly in the 2nd quarter. Turner was absolutely on fire in the first quarter but she was quiet for quite a while after that.

I thought the officiating was inconsistent with calls made early not being called later in the game. Nice to see many of the men's team show up through the course of the game.

Also - the women's game next Tuesday at the Golden One Center is at 5:00 not 5:30 as the program showed for the past couple of games.

I'm seeing lots to like from this team but lots of learning still to come. Too many passes being forced. They didn't look very comfortable handling the Boise full court press.

Good to see Campbell Gray getting some playing time. Jen seems to be careful bringing her along after her injury. The Ags seem best when they are in transition - they just fly down the court.
  • MBB: UC Davis (0-0, 0-0) vs. Cal (0-0, 0-0) Mon. Nov. 7, 8 PM @ Berkeley
Wow - I hardly recognize the Ags out there. 36-30 with 2:56. Out rebounding Cal 18-11

Epps is really impressive for a first-year. I like her court awareness, how she moves without the ball. She's got lots of smarts. Beware of this one!

I want to speak strongly against "Lady Ags." Aggie women? Sure. But we're all Aggies and the men aren't "Gentlemen Aggies." It's an affectation whose time is past.

    Thank you. </rant>
  • WBB: Exhibition vs SFSU (Nov 1, 2022)
Enjoyed the game. The 3rd quarter showed the Ags at their best - running. Multiple fast breaks lead to layups.

  • USC, UCLA eyeing Big Ten move by 2024
And then, on the lighter side, there's this:

  • USC, UCLA eyeing Big Ten move by 2024
I see in the LA Times that UCLA has a $102 million dollar deficit for it's athletic programs which will go to a surplus with the move to the Big 10. I don't understand how a public institution can run a deficit like this? And, of course, Stanford wanted to axe upwards of a dozen of its programs. Clearly there's a great illness in some parts of college sports.

Perhaps the Big Ten will start its own charter airline to move students around. Only half kidding - with all the money - and an availability of aircraft - maybe they'll do it or go in concert with the SEC.
  • Aggies may be playlng a big 10 team in 2027
I wonder if Hawai'i would leave the Big West and move to the Pac 12. I'd think if the Arizona, Utah, CO schools bail then rebrand the conference as, oh say the Pacific Coast Conference (that has a nice ring doesn't it?) and invite Hawai'i.

No scholarships in the Ivy League, right? Very different sports traditions.

So now UCLA and USC move to the Big 10. Egad. Will we be dissed yet again?

I'm really happy to see Des moving into a head coaching job. She's had really positive coaching models. Might have to hit a Sonoma game or two if possible! And it's a good sign for the program to have our staff moving out onto their own. I hope Jen is proud. The idea of Morgan coming back as a coach is a wonderful thought. Not sure if it makes sense for her at this point but I'd love to see it happen.
  • Dunning Article on the Big West Tournament This Year

I'm going to disagree. Big West isn't a well-funded conference. Dealing with the travel expense if definitely non-trivial. The NIT has it's own sources income (although I don't know how it works or how much is involved.)
  • Dunning Article on the Big West Tournament This Year
The travel situation is the killer for having a decentralized tournament. Hawai'i is certainly demonstrates the difficulty. As does Davis.

If the conference winner isn't known until the last game and has to host the tournament beginning on Tuesday the teams are going to be working really hard to find rooms. I don't know if there are local motels like the one in "Survive and Advance" that had the mirrors on the ceiling but there might be some sub-optimum lodging.Or some really expensive choices in Sacramento. In the case of Hawai'i the problem is both lodging and air travel. I don't think the Big West can fork over for every team to travel on charter and the airfares for commercial would be expensive. Lodging might be rather hard to come by on short notice.

Having the conference tournament in SoCal at least put the games close to most of the schools.

And, frankly, having the tournament in the gambling center of the US reeks of problems. I'm old-fashioned about this but it's just too easy to get a player to tip the scales in subtle ways.

  • MBB: UC Davis (11-7, 4-3) vs. UC Santa Barbara (12-10, 4-5) 6 PM @ Pavillion
This was a terrific game to watch. My wife came away feeling that the "big calls" (or lack of them) went strongly against the Ags. I know for certain there was a no-call on Pepper toward the end of the game that was so utterly blatant...well, does not good to argue over calls.

We are over-matched consistently in the lane. Learning not to foul where there's no more to be done is a lesson the Ags haven't learned very well this season.

I'm concerned with Fuller's loss and hope he might return next week? I thought he was out during the shoot-around before the game but then he wasn't dressed.

Need to shoot free throws better - that's for sure!
