• UC Davis to play USC 2021
(I would not be surprised to see some FBS school find an opening in their schedule and a willingness to travel to LA over Labor Day....and SC boosters find some spare money in their change pockets to buy out this contract.)
  • UC Davis to play USC 2021
    There are some USC/UCD connections.

Paul Hackett was a HC at SC, Daryl Gross was an ass't A.D., Ken O'Brien was an ass't coach. SC fans hate Hackett...he was known a "He who shall not be named." Gross gets points for whatever he did to bring Pete Carroll on board, but subsequent hires fell flat. USC game program used to note that among the USC folks in some Hall of Fame or another was O'Brien.

SC plays home games at the Coliseum, UCLA at the Rose Bowl.

Any chance SC will keep Helton around for two more seasons?
  • Yanez tranfers to Oregon
Transferring works both ways. Three soccer players have followed new women's coach Tracy Hamm from San Francisco State to Davis.

  • Beach volleyball player sues for injuries suffered during match
Been a LONG, LONG time since I was in law school (and I NEVER practiced personal injury law,) but "assumption of the risk" and "contributory negligence" have generally been replaced by something called "comparative fault" or "comparative negligence." Anything the plaintiff recovers would be offset to the extent the jury determines the plaintiff is at fault for their own injuries. Hard to say how much an athlete is at fault for participating in a contest at the direction of their school and coach.

It's safe to say that the Oregon coach and other defendants will file some sort of cross-complaint or other pleading against UC Davis and the NCAA for allowing the game to proceed in harsh weather conditions as well as other acts of negligence. Mental suffering, anxiety, PTSD...all things probably added more by the player's attorneys than the player to increase any recovery or to apply more pressure to resolve the case.
  • Cal's non-diverse HC lineup gets fan heat
(We wouldn't look any more diverse, and Rehn Sheffield, Director of Field & Track and Cross-Country, just announced he is leaving. https://ucdavisaggies.com/news/2019/6/27/mens-track-and-field-three-big-west-titles-highlight-sheffields-tenure-at-uc-davis.aspx?path=general )
  • Yanez tranfers to Oregon
That, and other than the Belotti, et al., connection, I really don't care much for Oregon. They seem to have sold their soul to Nike, no score can be run up too high, etc....
  • Yanez tranfers to Oregon
Ducks' website says she can play immediately.

    https://goducks.com/news/2019/6/24/softball-ducks-sign-standout-lefty-brooke-yanez.aspx

I try to find comfort in the old line that "we don't want anybody that doesn't want to play for us," and wish her the best, but don't like the idea of a mid-major conference being a feeder program for the bigger conferences.

  • The Fate of the Grad

    McArthur Park
    Antique Bizarre
    Wooden Ships

Some "dive bar" on G, probably the same one you mentioned earlier, but I can't recall the name either.

Another bar and restaurant across the street near Davis Hardware, whose name I cannot recall which is sad because I worked there one summer....

Back when I was at Davis there were three hard liquor ABC licenses...Larry Blake's which was a college place and decent restaurant, Mr. B's which was towns people though developing a college crowd, and Honorable G's which was basically a Chinese restaurant and I have no idea if anyone ever went there for just a drink.

Before The Grad there was Jekyll & Hyde's.
  • The Fate of the Grad
Lots of good memories, which is something considering that on at least one occasion I left with significant memory impairment.
  • Khari Jones new Montreal Interim Head Coach
Baseball worked out so well for them.
  • Bear on Campus
Apparently the bear is not the only animal problem on campus. Cheeto the cat is facing serious weight issues.
    https://www.sacbee.com/news/local/article231404188.html

And I am not sure what it says about the current state of newspaper journalism that the Bee runs a video of last week's bear in an article about this week's cat.
  • Athlon Preseason Top 25
    - Street & Smith's notes that the Big Sky scheduling "gives certain teams an advantage because of the unwieldy 13-team conference."

"This year it's Eastern Washington, which avoids playing both Weber State and UC Davis as well as the fourth Big Sky team in the playoffs in 2018, Montana State."

Parenthetically, similar things happen in the Big (14) Ten where teams play the other six teams in their division but only three teams in the other division. (It used to be just two...) As a result you can play in the Western division and while you play Nebraska, Wisconsin, Iowa and Northwestern, anyone of which may be having a good year, you might avoid Eastern division teams like Michigan, Michigan State, An Ohio State University and Penn State and only play Maryland, Rutgers and Indiana.

Of course the athletic directors like getting a piece of the gate receipts when you play at Michigan, An Ohio State, or Penn State. Indiana, not so much.
  • Athlon Preseason Top 25
Street & Smith's has UCD 7th, third in the Big Sky behind Eastern Washington and Weber State. Maier is the QB on their All America team (and is pictured on the FCS Preview page).

"UC Davis (10-3, 7-2) reached new heights last year under Dan Hawkins, the former Boise State and Colorado head coach who led the Aggies to their first FCS quarterfinal berth in history in just his second season. Reigning Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year Jake Maier returns at quarterback after passing for 302.4 yards per game (fourth in the FCS). He'll direct an offense that also includes sophomore running back Ulonzo Gilliam, who rushed for 976 yards and caught 57 passes as a freshman. Also back is all-conference tight end Wes Preece and Freshman All-America linebacker Montell Bland, who was second on the team in tackles last year."
  • Bear on Campus
On a couple of recent occasions we have taken the dog to run at Slack but had to cut the visit short when 1. a coyote, and 2. a skunk, meandered across the rec/IM field near the Slack soccer pitch. Didn't wait around to see why the skunk was lifting its tail.
  • NCAA baseball dilemma
To no real surprise, Stanford won, 12-3, eliminating Sac. Still closer than Friday's 11-0 Stanford victory.
