  • The Stanford Robber Barons, or Thunderchickens
I had a friend who attended the Junior University at about that time. He favored "Robber Barons." In his words, cardinal isn't even a color, it's a "hue."

On a barely related note, the present day Arizona Cardinals acquired their nickname when, then known as the Racine, (IL) Normals, the team owner purchased old uniforms from the University of Chicago. He dubbed the color, "cardinal red," and the nickname was born. http://mentalfloss.com/article/25650/whats-nickname-origins-all-32-nfl-team-names

  • FCS-FBS Matchups / UC Davis covered by tbe San Francisco Chronicle
Meanwhile the Bee is promoting a sports only digital newsletter:

I only read this twice, but one word I haven't found yet is "college."
  • Week 3: UC Davis @ Stanford
    ↪zythe
The thing I don't like about "Cal Davis" is that it sounds like someone's name rather than a school. I hear Cal Davis and I think Cal Worthington....(and his dog, Spot.) UC Davis is fine. Love the throw back logo. Even have a couple of caps with it. I am not a real baseball historian, but someone once compared it to the hat worn by the Chicago American Giants of the Negro Leagues. I like it better on the caps than the horse in a horse-shoe logo.
  • US News & World Report Rankings for the University of California Public University System
Wall Street Journal runs a similar poll. UCD is #41 overall and #5 in their public college listings.

  • RIP Jason Hairston
Not from a giant of journalism, but on the personal side of this incident:

  • Week 2: Big Sky
From the stats it looks like Slack was up 14-13 with about five minutes to go in the game. Aztecs put up 15 points in the last 4+ minutes.
  • RIP Jason Hairston
Odd that rugby might have safer rules about tackling and contact with players. Have to "wrap them up," no blocking, have to enter scrums or rucks from the back, no high-tackles.

I played a little bit of very poor football for a very poor high school team many, many years ago. Yes, we had helmets. Not, they weren't leather. Based stricly on being slow and the least small person on the team (at 185 lbs.,) I played on the line(s). On offense we were taught to block using a triangle...the three points being forearms and the forehead. I could make a joke or two, but this is neither the time or place.

Very sad twist on this story:

  • Mens' Water Polo, 2018
Wow, almost lost my after dinner snack...banner at athletic website suggests tonight's water polo score was UCD 13, Cal 10. (Or it did a few minutes ago.) Unfortunately that was an error and the actual score was Mother Campus 13, University Farm 10. Still a 3 goal loss to the Golden Bears is a small accomplishment in itself. Hopefully the team can build on that and improve over the season.
  • RIP Jason Hairston
Hopefully this will avoid politics in the current era, but I am including this link because it suggests Jason may have had CTE/concussion issues:
    https://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/nfl-star-jason-hairston-dies-after-hunting-trip-with-donald-trump-jr/news-story/368acb240dc6e51e97c89b33e5902c32

And yes, RIP Jason. WAY too young. As I googled his name it seems he had recently turned a love of the outdoor life into a very comfortable financial situation. Makes his passing at this age even sadder.

  • 2018-19 Causeway Cup
    Everything is 5 points now....

UCD website now has a 2018-19 Causeway Cup page. As of last night Slack did not. The UCD site says there are 85 possible points this year. Last year there was no women's golf and softball was cancelled due to weather. The site shows four events yet to be scheduled; softball, men's track & field, women's track & field and men's tennis, however the Slack men's tennis page shows a match in Davis on January 19, 2019. No indication as to whether or not beach volleyball will be included.
  • 2018-19 Causeway Cup
Great win in volleyball as Ags defeat the Hornets, 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 13-25, 25-14).

Running score is now UCD 10, CSUS 0.

Next event by my unofficial tally is the first of two men's soccer matches on September 29 at Davis.

    Go Ags!
  • Mens' Water Polo, 2018
Aggies finished the Bruno Tournament with convincing wins over host, Brown, 18-6, and over St. Francis of Brooklyn, 10-4. Can't rest on any laurels though as they host No. 3 Cal this Thursday evening.
  • Mens' Water Polo, 2018
....whom the Aggies defeated, 18-10. Tomorrow begins with a match against host Brown and an afternoon game agains St. Francis of Brooklyn.
  • Week 1: UC Davis @ San Jose State
Street & Smith's piece on San Jose State ends with "Beyond the opener against UC Davis, it's tough to spot many victories on the schedule."

Fake News! #SAD! Making Aggies Great Again!
  • Week 1: UC Davis @ San Jose State
To be fair, Bee's Saturday print edition has an AP wire service article on the Davis game in the middle of page 2 of the sports section, (and nothing I could find on that other school.)
  • Week 1: UC Davis @ San Jose State
    ↪Riveraggie
Whatever the expectations, the Mercury News wrote before and after articles, and with some size and analysis. The best anyone can expect of the Bee is a small bit in tomorrow's paper, with an attribution to "a campus website." Probably too late for even that. WIll have to write something about Slack's opener against the NAIA FIghting Saints of St. Francis University of Illinois.

Utah took control and scored 34 unanswered points to win, 41-10.

In the other Big Sky opener Montana State topped visiting Western Illinois, 26-23.
