• Sac State Game
The baseball press release indicates the Ags and Hornets will still play a home and away series this year, (https://ucdavisaggies.com/news/2019/3/11/baseball-aggie-to-face-hornets-tigers-in-mid-week-meetings.aspx?path=baseball ), however the Causeway Cup site is giving this game the full 5 points, (https://ucdavisaggies.com/sports/2018/9/4/Causeway-Cup-18-19.aspx ), indicating the game originally scheduled in February but postponed for rain will not be made up.
  • MBB 3/9 5 pm DH Senior Game: Riverside (9-22 & 3-12) @ UCD (11-18 & 7-8)
As a side note, Bradley, Coach Les' alma mater and his previous college coaching position, won the Missouri Valley tournament tonight with a victory over Northern Iowa and will be going to the NCAA tournament. Keep the faith. Bradley was the 5 seed and Northern Iowa the 6th. The top four teams lost in the conference tournament.
  • Goodbye Freeborn Hall
I'm thinking the Ike & Tina Turner Review might have been the first step on the road to needing seismic retrofitting.
  • Goodbye Freeborn Hall
Buildings at Tercero have been knocked down?!?!?!?!?

    Lord, I feel old(er) now.

Saw BB King at Freeborn, and Tina Turner when she was still with Ike.
  • 2018-19 Causeway Cup
Which isn’t to say that it wouldn’t be awesome to run the table and beat them by 70.01.
  • 2018-19 Causeway Cup
I am also curious, but the UCD athletic site, adding two victories at 1.67 points each to a previous score of 40 points, has the cumulative score as 43.33 points for UCD. 1.67+1.67= 3.33. Must be new math.

"50 years (and a little...) since I graduated from high school and I have yet to use the quadratic formula in my life."

So to revise my earlier comment....a victory in beach volley ball will assure a tie...a victory in any other sport assures a win.
  • 2018-19 Causeway Cup
WIth today's sweep of the beach volleyball games, Ags pick up 3.34 points to take a 43.4-10 lead in the running Causeway Cup score. A victory in any sport assures the Ags will win yet another Cup. And it's barely March. Life is good.
  • Beach Volleyball Facility
Just saw that. To borrow a line, I think from Dr. Mike, after the equestrian team started with a victory over Delaware State, "these were the greatest wins in program history, no question!"
  • 2018-19 Causeway Cup
UCD gymnastics 195.450 - Slack 192.625 tonight giving the Ags another Causeway victory. Running score is now UCD 40, Slack 10. This was a triangular meet and Cal was the over all winner. Next schedule are two beach volleyball matches tomorrow, followed by softball at Davis and baseball at Sac 10 days later.

    Go Ags.
  • Increasingly Frustrated With CA Logo
How about the cap logo for the Chicago American Giants of the Negro Leagues?

  • Beach Volleyball Facility
According to both websites the beach volleyball games set for tomorrow, March 2nd, will be played at the new facility at Howard Field rather than at the park in Folsom which is Slack's home court.

Of course with the current weather forecast it may not matter where the matches are scheduled if they are likely to be postponed.
  • Increasingly Frustrated With CA Logo
I like the "lemon" CA logo. Not as cluttered as the revised horse-head logo. (Though I like that as well.)
  • 2018-19 Causeway Cup
Softball has been rescheduled to April 30th due to rain. Baseball has been pushed back one day to Wednesday the 27th, also due to rain. I guess the baseball teams are more optimistic about the weather.

In other Causeway Cup news, beach volleyball has been added. There are three matches scheduled this year, all at the park in Folsom which serves as Slack's home sand court; two on March 2nd and one on April 5th. Our new courts will not be used in competition until late April. This year each beach volleyball match will count 1.67 pts. Next season will go to a home and away with each match counting for 2.5 points. Guess that means that there are 90.01 points at stake this year. Ags have 37.5 points thus far and will need 7.51 to clinch. Next scheduled event is gymnastics at Sacramento this Friday evening for a triangular meet with Slack and Cal.
  • 2018-19 Causeway Cup
Looking at the forecast for today and tomorrow, I suspect the baseball and softball games against Slack will be postponed....and good luck rescheduling such things.
  • UOP drops field hockey
One step is to grow the sport in the Pacific Time Zone. CIF does not sponsor regional or statewide championships but there are a few sections....Central Coast, Southern, San Diego and North(?) that sponsor the sport. Perhaps colleges in Southern California can pick up the sport.

At last word we no longer have a conference affiliation in the sport, travel to the other side of the Missouri River ain't cheap...
  • Where’s the new equestrian coach?
    Beat the (Delaware State) Hornets!
  • Bruce Edwards Says Ags Will Go FBS in 5-10 Years
I have heard rumors and allegations both ways about rugby scholarships at Cal, but in the end, I don't believe that they do. As a varsity sport, within what ever department handles NCAA and other intercollegiate athletics at Cal, I believe they get some perks, such as a few preferential admissions, access to training and medical facilities, access to study programs, preferential class enrollment....but I don't believe they offer athletic scholarships.

I also understand that the school holds the team to the same standards as other varsity sports, particularly regarding recruiting,...I am not sure if that applies to grades and inter-college transfers.

However I also understand that their participation is included in Title IX issues...and that Cal Rugby, (and possibly other men's sports [baseball??]) help fund some women't sports.

Rugby at St. Mary's is still, like almost every other college, within the club sport program. I have never heard that they offer athletic scholarships for rugby at St. Mary's.

One thing both teams have in common is a strong program with good and consistent coaching. So many club sports rely on a coach who is woefully underpaid and who does it for a few years before moving on. Clark has been at Cal for decades, and O'Brien has been at St. Mary's for 16 years. Both men love the game, there isn't any Nick Saban type money in coaching collegiate rugby.

Success breeds success and the schools lure top level players.

Cal in particular has a strong backing from alumni and fans. They play their home matches at Witter Field, named for the family that started the Dean Witter investment business. Imagine having your own pitch and not having to share it with other teams or with the intramural program.
  • 2018-19 Causeway Cup
Ags came in 1st, (Alaska Anchorage 2nd), and Slack 3rd in a three team gymnastic meet. Davis takes 2.5 Causeway Cup points to bring the score to UCD 37.5, CSUS 10. Next cup events are a month away on February 26th when Sac travels to Davis for baseball while the Ags head east to play softball.
  • Bruce Edwards Says Ags Will Go FBS in 5-10 Years
On the good side, they defeated Slack, 48-18, in October.

(One argument for taking it easy moving to higher divisions. A couple of years ago UCD rugby club was doing well in the second level of collegiate rugby, then moved up last season. Score from Berkeley today: Cal 136, UCD 0. Two weeks ago it was St. Mary's 78, UCD 3 in a home match.)
